A friend as just asked me an odd question - that might be connected to a virus or something simular (sound like a programers 'joke')

Her 5 key doesn't work - stop laughing because it not as simple as a dodgey keyboard.

It used to happen on her desktop (would be a problem for a month, then work fine for a few months then stop working again). she reciently move a large number of files to her new laptop and now the 5 keys not working on that!

Also she tells me that shift +s does nothing but caps lock +s does give a 'S'

Her anti-virus - AVG free - finds nothing.

Any idea's

Edit: I've also just learned that this happen from login onwards in all programmes, BUT when the 5-key isn't working then it randomly types fives - even when on the desktop with no programes running (aka beep, beep, beep weight a few seconds beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep wait a second, beep, beep wait a minute, beep, beep, beep etc)

If she opened a word document - a whole lot's of fives are typed

basically make the machine unusable :(

I'd be tempted to do an Online Virus Scan. If not then do some spyware scans. Sounds like "key logger" program gone wrong, or as you say a "joke".

Sounds like a dodgy keyboard/stuck key if it just randomly presses the 5 key enough to fill the buffer and get the PC beeping.
