Hi everyone. I'm in SF for work next month, and have just under a week off beforehand. I'm after some recommendations. Obviously I can't go too far in a week, but I don't want to only do city stuff - I'd like to get down the coast, and/or see some of the parks as well.

I'm currently thinking of heading slightly south, towards Monterrey, and using that as a base to explore Big Sur. But if I'm doing that, is it more sensible just to get accommodation in the city, and to use that as a base to get both south and north towards Napa? Thanks!

Hire a car and (if i recall correctly) the route 1 is a great drive. SF Central has a nice park in it, cool to go to China Town, Nelson Mandela monument, alcatraz, lots of local walks.

Edit: you can rent a bike and go over the golden gate bridge and get a ferry back from the other side

This pic is from LA (San Luis opisbo) but loads of nice scenery and stuff to do in San Francisco (unfortunately my memory is terrible!)

Have a look at the thread in motors for some tips

My plans were to take the coast road to LA and enjoy the mtb parks and towns on the way down.

Taking it slowly a week that way is perfect with a fast I route back to San Francisco

I'd suggest a couple of days in San Fransisco and then a few days in Yosemite if you like hiking.

SF highlights for me were Alcatraz (make sure you book now - you may be too late already), the Archor Brewery tour, The Golden Gate Park and
California Academy of Sciences (in particular the planetarium).

Alcatraz is fascinating, and well worth the trip. As said try and get it booked ASAP.

Hire a bike and cycle over the bridge and back.

Head to Orphan Andys for a cracking breakfast.

Another vote for taking Coastal Route 1 down to Monterey stopping at Half Moon Bay or Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is supposed to be excellent, but I never had time to visit.

In SF:

- Alcatraz (book now)
- Planetarium
- Fisherman’s Wharf if you really like tourist stuff.
- Union Square and the Trolley Cars - DO THIS IN THE DAYTIME!
- Tony’s Pizza on Stockton Street.

If you’re an Apple fan, you can visit the Company Store at the new Apple Park in Cupertino.

Get food at Bacon Bacon food truck and a drink at Jack's Cannery.

Drive round to Stinson Beach (close) or Santa Cruz (a day out).
