It's frightening - then again GCSEs are far too easy IMO, though I don't know if it's the teachers not doing a good job, the government skewing the figures or if people are genuinely becoming lazier and possibly more stupid? When I was at school nobody had computers really, the internet didn't exist until I was getting to the end of A-Levels where most people did 3-4, though some did 5 and we all had to do a miminum of 10 GCSEs some of us did 13! This was considered very normal. I've seen applications for jobs now and they state minimum of 3-5 grade C GCSEs?! I mean seriously?!
I know that exams aren't necessarily the epitome of education or your ability but they are a relatively good gauge on average of people's aptitudes to learning and development. Obviously everyone learns in different ways and not everyone is going to be an academic but to be proud or accept mediocrity seems really daft to me.
