Lo all, first post on here. I am looking to buy a 17" TFT and i can't make up my mind. Main use will be for gaming. I have come across 5 monitors while looking around, they are:

Acer 17" AL1717AS 8ms TFT
AG NEOVO F417 17" TFT
Samsung SM720N 17" TFT
Samsung 17" SM730BF 4ms
ViewSonic VX724 17" BLK/SIL DVI 4MS TFT

I was wondering which of the above you think would be most suitable and if there are any i have missed that might be even better for the job?

Don't know a whole load about monitors and just want to get it right, been trying to choose for 2 days now.

have you considered a 19" model? You can get some very good 19" screens for very good prices and imo there is little reason to settle for a 17" nowadays. The extra size is really nice for gaming and movies and adds to the feeling of immersion. However, if you really want a 17" screen then the VX724 is arguably the best of the bunch for gaming. The use of overdrive is well controlled and really helps boost grey to grey transitions. Would be a good choice if you want to stay 17"

Recieved this monitor today and having a few problems with it.

I fired up Pro Evolution 5 and there was what could only be described as a "wave" going under my pitch when i passed the ball about.

Solved the above problem by turning on V-Sync, however i hate using v-sync, it slows absolutely everything down and everything feels wrong, its horrible to use.

Is there any other way to solve this? I am using the DVI input just now, was wondering if the analog would change anything. Apart from that the monitors been pretty much spot on.

Sorry to bump this back up, just want to try get it sorted as if i leave it too long there will be nothing i can do about it.

A slight update, when i changed the res in the game to 1280x1024 the wave got smaller, although it was still present. There were no problems at all in CS 1.6 at 800x600 and all other games like WoW ran perfectly.

Only had the problems with Pro Evolution Soccer 5. I really don't want to have to turn on V-SYNC everytime i want to play it, im going to try the analog input aswell.

V-Sync is best to be left on with a TFT as otherwise you will get tearing occuring. I have always prefered to use V-Sync enabled rather than not enabled.

you have to use vsync with pro evo. but that shouldn't be a problem as you don't need a beasty pc to run it - it should still be very smooth. :)

You should also try to run games etc at the monitor's native res, it'll give a sharper picture, if your rig can handle it. (Native I think will be 1280 x 960 or there abouts)

So will it basically just be a case of turning V-Sync on when i want to play pro evo?

I can leave it off all other times and it will be fine?

well it works on a game by game basis. you might find some games absolutely must have vsync on (like pro evo) and some don't. :p

iirc, i even had to enable vsync when playing pro evo on my old crt.... :D
