The thing that puts me off old GTA games is that the old combat system wasn't fun at all. It made all of the big fire fights seem like a chore.

Although I do like GTA4 they did cut out a LOT of the random stuff you could do which was very disappointing. Most of the things he mentions in the article are minor niggles when compared to the list of things you could do in San Andreas but now can't.

Combat was annoying in the older installments, but imo GTA 3 and Vice City were the highlights of the series. San Andreas stretched the formula out so thin that it felt like GTA-lite.

GTAIII I was completely blown away with simply due to the sandbox element. I think it was actually one of the first 3D sandboxes?

Vice City was just amazing, the setting, bikes and actually flyable vehicles was insane and I still hadn't got over complete free-roam.

San Andreas was starting to lose that awesomeness of the free roam but there was just an unbelievable amount of things you could do that it maintained amazing GTAness.

IV was way too hyped I think, the graphics/engine, the phone and the wanted system were great features but the amount of things removed in comparison to SA was criminal! Missions felt boring and the sandbox genre didn't hold its awesomeness anymore as many games had done it now. Imo that’s why I didn’t like it.

SA is on another level to VC. the size of it all and how it all works together may never be beaten. the storyline the comedy and the similarities to the real 'gangsta rap' era is outstanding. the vehicles are awesome. dont think ive ever enjoyed a game so much

sometimes you can make things too big though and i think thats what both SA and 4 suffered from for me.

The driving is one of the best parts of IV, its 10 fold better than all previous GTA's that just feel detached and well crap.

i couldnt disagree more. every car or bike in 4 handles like a boat with masses of understeer regardless of speed. it's far worse than any of the previous games.

oh absolutely, yes. i'm driving them incorrectly. Nothing to do with the game is it? never mind them handling like no other game on earth.

Driving in Iv was fantastic, even though the suspension was slightly animated with more bounce it gave the driving a bit more "fun" to it and made car chases awesome.

what does that prove?

the driving in IV is slow and cumbersome and it shouldn't have been. the previous games were far from perfect but please nobody try to tell me IV is any more realistic. It was a change for the worse IMO and im far from alone in that thought. If i was there wouldnt be a plethora of car handling mods out there.

I still enjoyed the game regardless, but dont sit there and try to tell me im doing it wrong LOL.

I literally can't play 3, Vice & San Andreas because of how comical the driving models are
