So, its that time again... it's been 5 years+ since my last build... intel p4 prescott on socket 487!! pc3200 ocz low voltage cas 2, x800xt pe, it was a beast when i got it! I've missed so many generations its hard to count

i want a sandybridge CPU, as it looks absolutely amazing!

Anyway, the question is should i wait for the z68 chipset mobos out apparently 8th of may? or just upgrade now? i will be using SSD, if that makes a difference.

thanks guys.

may as well wait to see as it's so close. buy an upgrade to current 1155 sandybridge socket would be a significant upgrade. The added ssd would make your P4 cry like an infant.

You might as well wait and see yes. Im impressed that you avoided the temptation to upgrade from that setup through the generations inbetween. Maybe even wait to see what bulldozer brings from AMD?

Sounds like its more like 7 years as that was about my spec before my current pc which has just hit 5 years old AMD X2 etc.

As for waiting, I would say its worth it, I am in the same boat and as I have waited this long I dont mind waiting a bit longer, worth it to make sure it lasts another 5 years :D

Jcb33.

yeah wait and see what the Z68 prices and specs are like. Might aswell take the time to get a good quality system that will last you another 5 years.

i havent upgraded for 4 years when i got my e6750 core2duo + Asus p5k + ATI x1950 pro (now HD 5850).

I shall be waiting for bulldozre what it has to offer.

Soudns like we are in pretty much the same boat, I'm saving to buy a new pc (waiting till near BF3 time...) and will be coming from a P4 2.8ghz, 2GB RAM and an AGP7800GS OC graphics card...think things have moved on a bit since then...lol!!!

thanks guys! guess i will wait a BIT longer, lol.

if you are on a c2d that is 6 years old, then mine must be much older than that! i remember getting the BEST i could get at the time, hence the x800xt pe. If c2d was out when i built it i would have got it :)

damn, my pc is so old i cant even remember how old it actually is. if there ever is a sign to upgrade, this must be it!

I was so glad to finally upgrade from conroe. My q6600 just felt so wrong now days haha.

Personally I wouldn't wait. The z68 boards won't make the P67 boards go down in price because they will be on premium for at least 2/3 months anyway. Furthermore I doubt bulldozer is going to bring anything to the table intel hasn't already plus with the premium price of when it comes out it probably won't be any cheaper anyway.

lol, well i've missed the entire ddr2 generation! and since i used to overclock FSB (bandwidth bottleneck?) has pretty much disappeared, from what i can garther though, overclocking is just MUCH MUCH easier these days. So i think us old schoolers r ok! :D

yeah ive given up waiting for BD, althought my first oc build was the classic amd athlon xp 1700+ if anyone remember, that was a B E A S T! something like 1.4ghz stock o/c to 2.2ghz stable...

if anyone remember those?? good ol days of FSB o/c.

People always presume if they wait for the next tech what they want now will be cheaper but it doesn't work that way.

New tech always comes out at more expensive and the current tech stays the same price. It's only about 7-12 months later that the prices start coming down truly. You can see this over and over again with Cpu's like nehelm and sandybridge and for instance until recently the 480GTX was at £300. The 480GTX had to hit EOL for quite some time before it came down in price.

Just buy now.

Looking at the mobo section of the forum the prices arent going to be drastically different for the z68 boards.
Either way I can wait and see, but I'll have a choice :)

well, if i am to wait it wont be because i think the price will drop, more so to see if the newer chipset will be worth having over the current p67, especially if the price wont be that different.

They could well be but I doubt it. AMD haven't brought out anything for a long time to fight intel on performance wize. It would be nice if they managed it though.

There is always the "supply and demand" problems on a new release hiking prices up by £30 at start for mobos in particular.
