Hi. I'm about to buy a new tv and wondered whether any of you bother with 5 year warranty's? I have an option to buy a tv and have it delivered to my house for £676 or buy in store from another shop and get a 5 year warranty, but is an extra £70 and you have to pick it up yourself.
Any advise?

Depends if you are likely to upgrade it anyway within 5 years or so?
If you can see yourself replacing it before 2015, then just get it cheaper without the 5yr cover.

If however, you want it to be a long-lasting purchase, and you cringe at the thought of having to replace it or spend several pennies getting it repaired, then go for the one with the guarantee.

Repair rates at most places are £80 minimum labour anyway, so it doesn't seem too bad.

I specifically bought my TV from john lewis for this very reason. I expect my TV to last 5 years without having to fartarse about with letters to retailers quoting SoGA etc. I know I can phone JL and they'll send an engineer to my house to fix it or declare it tooe xpensive to repair.

£70 is fairly cheap for good piece of mind. Maybe they have a cheaper 3 yr option. A lot of manufacturers are providing extended warranties free so maybe there's a similar tv from another brand that will cost you nothing for the cover

I bought my Plasma from the Pansonic store as they had the free 5 year warranty at the time. If they hadn't I'd have gone to John Lewis. 5 years warranty for £70 quid, that is £14 per year or 26p per week for peace of mind, for me it would be a no brainer.

There are very few items that I take out extended warranties on these days, but my TV is one. My only comment is that it isnt a Curry's 5 year warranty, because in general they arent worth the paper that they are printed on. Recently tried to claim on a Currys warranty for my mother in law and she ended up with something like £68 of curries vouchers, as the set was uneconomic to repair and the small print has a depereciation clause in it.

Thanks for the replies guys, does anyone know if richer sounds is supposed to be any good?

I've had a lot of trouble with curry's and dixon's in the past, I never go near that company anymore.

Richer Sounds is usually excellent and their warranty is 10% of the purchase price, always.

Alternatively if RS have the set in stock on display with price, get JL to price match and get the warranty free!

Sale of goods act means nothing at all, your letters are useless, and nothing but a hassle to the retailer, especially if it's an independent. How do people think it is the responsibility of the retailer as opposed to the manufacturer is beyond me.

It's often easier to go straight to the manufacturer for a faster resolution of the issue, but the law does state that it's the retailer's problem, not the manufacturer's.

http://whatconsumer.co.uk/shops-responsibility/ is a link I found with a quick Google if you aren't fully aware of what the SoGA covers, to say the SoGA means 'nothing at all' is perhaps a bit misguided.

Thank you Phil99. The law states that it is always the responsibility of the retailer to assist with faulty goods, although I some cases it may be beneficial to get the manufacturer involved.

Anyway, when it comes to my TV I have a 5 year warranty for the very reason that it was free at John Lewis.
