50 pound notes !!

Lack of large denominations has always been annoying in the UK.

Now that the populace has finally gotten some sense and caught up with our Dutch and German counterparts we happily accept bank transfers for large items like used cars. Previously that wasn't the case. People wanted cash, and you've to turn up with a ruck sack of 20s to buy anything decent.

Coming from China you will be shocked that we don't take WeChat as payment I bet.
Not really :D
I know WeChat (WeiXin) is not so big in other countries. Most preferring WhatsApp I think.

But yeah, if you have WeChat linked to your bank card over here, there's almost nothing you can't do.
Pay in corner shops, big shops, taxis, busses, pay your bills, buy cinema tickets, train tickets, the list goes on and on. All from inside that one chat app :)

Just go into a bank and ask them to change them for you. I don’t believe any in the UK doesn’t have a few hundred quid in twenties.
We'll have none of your sensible suggestions round here please. That's far too easy.

Question back the other way. I looked up WeChat payment but it seems to be able to set up an account you need a Chinese or HK phone number? I was going to do it on my phone, got the social network side set up but not the payment side and can't figure out how to do it.

Hmmm..... honestly I can't tell you the requirements. But I can say I have a Chinese number and Bank account over here. So was easy for me.
I DO remember having a problem with my initial set up of wechat wallet but that was more to do with entering my 'name' on my bank account details.
Had to actually go to the bank and ask what I was called in their system. Hahah !!

I've been turned away for trying to pay for a meal with £50s, it's a bit of a joke tbh.

Next time ask the bank to give you a lower denomination. Maybe £5s, so you can feel like a baller :D

That's all Chinese banks deal with. I'm surprised you've not faced this before.

Years ago, I had a Chinese student rock up at HSBC (<--- because, World Bank) and they'd bought their entire uni budget with them, including fees, in cash, in £50s...

In my research of this, it seems shops CAN refuse 50s and the old "THIS IS LEGAL TENDER" argument won't work.
However when paying a debt, money can not be refused in any circumstance.
So an example of a debt would be paying for a taxi ride after you've reached your destination or I assume paying for a meal once it's in your belly. :D

I ask because I go to HK a lot and although they take cards and cash at the moment, with the China influence I expect WeChat will slowly take over and preparing for it.

Oh, here is another thing about getting money from another country. Apparently, a 2000 yen note (about £15) is very rare and not something is used inside Japan and normally reserved for foreign exchanges. If you bring one into the country and then use it in a shop they all get very surprised as most people would've never seen one before.

Has had for ages, everyone in China uses WeChat to pay for stuff, even at little street vendors.

We only use it in a restricted capacity for those who communicate with our Shanghai office, due to privacy/security concerns (It uses client-to-server and server-to-client encryption as opposed to end-to-end encryption and lack of Tencent & China government trust). Wasn't aware they have a payment system with it. That sounds a little mad.

WeChat to them is more popular than Contactless with us. It is THAT big. Everyone and their dog has a smart phone in China and all you need is a camera on the phone for a QR code so even the most basic phones can do WeChat pay as opposed to NFC. Street food vendors takes them, a lot them don't even take cash now.

Have you ever thought about printing your own qr code and sticking it over the vendors when they’re distracted?

Crazy, more so when you look at the overall general practices of the communist dictatorship party of China and such things as the Sesame Score.
