£500-£550 build

But can the OP buy one from the MM? If not then why bring it up?

The DS3H was £54 and was cheaper than all the other H77/B75 boards at the time. With an i3 it's not going to be used for overclocking and sound runs over HDMI through the TV's output so the D3H was needless extra cost. ;)

OP doesn't need the Z77 + free cooler for the i3 I chose in the spec so the H77 saves a couple of quid on a tight budget. I could have gone mATX to get it under £600 inc. postage but the case can fit ATX so went with that instead because there may be peripherals that need the extra slots.

I'll stand by what I said though - i3+1080P is going to be a better experience than i5K on the existing monitor.

Look luke the 7770 is just not worth the cash if you buy it new. That is why the 2GB 7850 has been used in the other specs. Double the performance and comes with games to help soften the blow/justify the extra cost. I'm not "attacking" you just trying to inform the OP.

I don't link to competitors (or auction sites) as that is against forum rules. Anyone that considers a 7770 because they cant afford the 7850 I will ALWAYS point out they can get better value second hand.

I agree the i3 is a good bang for buck CPU. Most games don't really use a quad core to the full, BF3 is an exception and future titles will obviously start to exploit more cores. He gave me a £600 budget minus OS and I tried to give him the best rig I could for that budget. Yes I also agree that monitor he has is pants (I did say it would make my eyes bleed lol) which is why I added one in the trinity spec ;)

Nice build :) Would a quad core Phenom be better than the i3 later on as games start to use more cores?

No worries, I don't see it as an 'attack' at all. I agree, the 7850 is a much better than the 7770, that's never in doubt. It's a shame the 7770 isn't still on offer as it does make it a relatively expensive option now but I would still say the 7770 is better than Trinity should the current monitor continue being used.

Reading between the lines I think we can agree on the following:

At ~£350 without OS; Trinity is the best option.

At ~£400 with OS; Trinity is the best option.

At ~£400 without OS; the 7770 + G870 on the current monitor is the best option.

At ~£450 inc OS; the 7770 + G870 on the current monitor is the best option.

At ~£500 without OS; the 7850 + i3 on the current monitor is the best option.

At ~£550 inc. OS; 7850 + i3 + current monitor is the best option.

At ~£600 without OS; 7850 + i3 + 1080P monitor is the best option.

At ~£650 with OS; 7850 + i3 +1080P monitor is the best option.

At ~£700 without OS; 7850 + i5K + 1080P is the best option.

With/without OS and a new monitor now (or in the near future) is a £150 swing so it really helps to make the decision on this above all else first.

You wont be reusing parts fella. That rig is very old, the drives will be IDE no doubt too.

Little over but included a 1080P screen, the 7850 just isnt needed for his current monitor which frankly would make my eyes bleed lol

The AMD A10 APU is gaming capable but he can add a GPU down the line to add some more ooompf when needed. Fast RAM to feed the IGP to keep it happy for gaming, 8GB so you can lend some to the IGP. SSD will provide seriously fast boot times, 1TB of storage to keep films on etc. The mobo has a 3 year uk based warranty and HDMI output to the monitor. PSU is very good and is also modular making cable management easier.

Hope this helps. He could use the developers preview of windows 8 for free and then choose to buy either the win7 or win8 OS later. If he wants one now then drop the SSD to pay for one :D

Why would the monitor make your eyes 'bleed'?

1024x768 is going to be an old 4:3 screen that is probably 15" as a 17" one would normally be 1280x1024.

Gaming requires a lot of concentrating and so to concentrate on such a small screen for extended periods of time will put more strain your eyes.

I think that my friend has a matte finished monitor so would it still strain his eyes if he were to use the monitor?
