I need some recommendations for a new gaming computer I want to build. I am prepared to overclock but have no experience at doing it. I also need a OS, keyboard and mouse. I already have a screen and will look at getting a new one at a later date.
I want it to last as long a possible but not be too expensive. (budget as title says around £500-£600)
I was thinking maybe a Phenom II X2/3 or a i3 for the processor.
Thanks for any help

When you are ready to look for a monitor, the BenQ G2420HDBL 24" Widescreen LED Monitor [9H.L3XLB.QBE] is amazing value at just under £160. I got one earlier in the year from OC and its incredible value

clicky

Just throwing something into the mix. If you can use your current keyboard & mouse this is a pretty nice setup.

AMD tend to keep the same socket for quite sometime unlike intel. So this will last you sometime and easily allows you to upgrade the cpu if you ever want to.
Motherboard supports crossfire so you can add another 5770 in the future.
If you do need a mouse/keyboard downgrade the motherboard/ram to fit it into your budget, but you probally wont get a crossfire board

If you can slightly increase your budget, you upgrade the harddrive to a 1TB Hdd and a change to a modular psu, but that is your choice.

And as jibbly said the BenQ G2420HDBL 24 is a very nice monitor. The reviews say everything about it

I like the look of the build from lamps. I can increase my budget to £650.
Anyone else got any recommendations?

Slightly over with a view to future proofing, and with no windows 7, but get a student mate's email and you can get that for 30 quid anyhoo.

The 5850 will mean the machine will game for a good while; mount the spotcool to blow over the top of the card and that is cooling it solved. Sharkoons for the front of the case. Your processor would be an obvious bottleneck- but that one will do the job and is so cheap replacing in 6-9 months for a top of the range am3 chip+heatsink would be a nice upgrade path.
UBS and sata 3 both on the board- year down the line upgrade would be a nice ssd, long term that ll handle the really fast amd chips out next year.
