Current Spec: Vista Ultimate 64, GA-EP45-UD3LR ,4G x GeIL 6400, Q6600
Palit 275GTX ,
, Lian Li PC-7 , ''650w power supply ( suspect it may be on its way out??? ) ''

My Hdd with vista has parked itself once and for all

So to cheer myself up and get ready for the gaming and astronomy imaging season I have decided to upgrade...

using the case I have because its integrated in my furniture I am looking for a swift tune up..

£500 is my limit, I want the operating system included...

I'd like a new MB,RAm,CPU

I'd welcome any thoughts ..

If you're looking for a MB, CPU and RAM together, one of the bundles will probably suit you quite well. I'd suggest the Radon i5 760 bundle- the overclocking will mean you notice a serious difference in performance compared to your Q6600, an already powerful CPU.

I'd recommend getting a Corsair 550VX PSU (£68.98), as you'll need a reliable one, and if you need a new HDD, get a spinpoint F3 1TB, they're very cheap and perform well.

Of course, all of this comes to about £500 without the OS, so you could either migrate Vista to the new computer, find a reasonably cheap copy that you could squeeze into your budget as well, or downgrade to one of the also considerable overclocked i3 bundles.

Apart from the suspect HDD and PSU it looks like you still have some capable hardware there? . . . Which version of the Q6600 is that and did you OverClock it? . . . running at 3GHz + that's still a very good processor! . . .

Are you wanting a new version of Windows or do you have the install disk for the older Vista Ultimate 64? . . could that not be re-used or?

O/S aside I don't see you really need anything else apart from a new HDD/SSD and maybe a new PSU? . . . what make is the older PSU and how old is it? . . what makes you think its about to croak? :D

Let us know the answer to these questions please . . . apart from that I have been enjoying the good views of Jupiter this week!

Thanks.. cant remember what version Q6600 it is, I bought it from here 2 years ago, its only clocked in software not at the bios, I could never get the damn thing to post when clocking there ..

I was think similarly to your advise, perhaps I should ring OC and get a new drive and OS, I'm not sure if my motherboard will support SD, it would be nice ;)

Do you go on SGL?

Jupiter last night was spectacular, between the clouds the seeing was fantastic, I've got a 5" meade 127 APO and although not excotic was observing through a William Optic 16mm UWAN and Celestron Ultima barlow...

Stunning!

I also managed to get 60+ minutes of DATA on M13

Cheers

I was gonna say download CPU-z here and look for the revision but then I remembered your disk has maybe bOrked! :p . . . if the processor is two years old it may be a [B3] revison but could also be the newer and cooler [G0] revision? . . .

Regardless it will still run at 3.0GHz with a little persuasion . . .

Done in BIOS of course and not software! ;) . . . any motherboard that has a SATA port and can run a HDD can run an SSD . . . the price of SSD is pretty high still so whether you get one or not depends on how much storage you actually need? . . . would 40GB or 64GB be enough for all your games and applications? . . . and perhaps a second 1TB HDD running alongside to store all your bulky images/videos etc?

Are you totally sure your old HDD is bOrked? . . . is it clunking or similar? . . . can you describe the problem/symptoms with the system please? . . . also can you answer the follwing question?

WhOOsh! . . . all that technical stuff is right over my head but if we can get your system up and running I'm sure to tap you up for further technical info! . . . I have just been observing it with the good old fashioned eye-ball® but kinda wishing I could get a more close up detailed view/inspection!

A reasonably good pair of binoculars will easily & clearly show Jupiter's Moons- Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto - beware! Once you see them it gets expensive - Bresser 10 x 50 binoculars often show up in Aldi for £15 !! dont knock em.... there really very good.. ;)

My HDD has been 'ticking' or 'clicking' for about a week, ive had boot issues, my keyboard wont work when it asks if I'd like to boot into safe mode, o also cant use my vista disc because the keyboard in necessary to make changes ( this was the case when I ran XP before)

I'll need 60 gig with my clobber and office... etc.

Thanks for the help...

Hello Guy,

I'm trying to find out exactly what the problem with your computer is . . . so far it sounds likely that the HDD has maybe gone (it happens) but I'm still not 100% . . . .

So when you power up the System all the fans comes on and the PC goes to boot but hangs at the O/S load screen right? . . . that by itself could just be a bOrked O/S install from a virus or simular but if the disk has been making strange clunking noises as well then perhaps it really has given up the ghost! :( . . . have you got any further info on the disk please? . . . what make is it? . . . how old is it? . . . what size is it? . . . its possibly covered by warranty also . . .

So if your just talking the replacement disk, most affordable option (£45):

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB

£44.99 inc

If your talking about SSD + Storage HDD (£174.98)

Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB

£111.99 inc

Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB

£62.99 inc

If your generating important and irreplaceable astronomical images & video I would maybe consider doubling up on that last Western Digital Caviar Green drive and creating a RAID-1 (Mirrored Array) which safeguards your data against a disk failure? . . . I can talk you through the process if you don't understand . . . but an SSD for your O/S and Apps and a 1.5TB RAID-1 Mirrored Array would be very, very nice indeed if one has the budget! :)

Lastly is the question of the PSU? . . . which you have failed to answer on two occasions now! :p

what make is the older PSU and how old is it? . . what makes you think its about to croak?

Depending on the answer to this question you may or may not need a newer unit? . . . I woudn't buy one unless your current unit is no-name and ancient but you mentioned 650watts and the rest of your hardware looks good so maybe its a good model also . . . . tell me what it is please and why you think its "suspect"? :D

[Off Topic]

Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto

Hold the astronomical talk for the moment guy . . . I'm totally interested but I'm a Super-Tasker not a Multi-Tasker and am finding it hard to get the info I need about your current computer problem in order that I can give you the best information to get you back up and running! . . . . once your PC is all good and working again I will be asking you a lot of info on astronomy!

And if you really do you need a new O/S then here are your two options, the OEM is the most affordable but will involve some "shanningins" if you want to use it on a new system in the future (a call to MS, about a 5 min process) . . . or you can pay the extra £25 for the full retail version which basically means you can install it on a new system in the future without any "shanningins"

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM

£81.06 inc

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - Retail (Full Version)

£105.74 inc

Lol... sorry...

I switch the computer on and can now only get to 'verifying dmi pool data' then it hangs..

The HDD is an older WD320 and has had an operating system on it for 3 years.. well out of warranty and I doubt I could find the receipt ..

The PSU is from the local computer shop since gone bust I think its a 'powercool' It was bought on one of those Saturday panicks after the last one set on fire :D

The PSU fan gets really noisy when playing COD after about an hour.. when I open the side on the case it quietens down... I'm suspecting its getting hot. Ive had the PSU out and blasted the dust out of it ( lots) and its not as noisy..

Crucial Real SSD C300 64GB looks like a good choice.. can I raid 2?
I wanted 7 ultimate because I've read remote access is available..

Cheers
Guy

Hello Guy,

The HDD is an older WD320 and has had an operating system on it for 3 years.. well out of warranty and I doubt I could find the receipt ..
Does sound like it could be a bOrked drive . . . . either grab the Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB above for the most affordable quick fix or get the SSD if your feeling flush!

When you remove the old HDD enter the serial number here to check the warranty . . . no receipt is necessary

If your going to buy multiple 1.5TB Data drives for a RAID-1 Array on the GA-EP45-UD3LR mobo then maybe you need to pickup some SATA data cables if you don't have any spare . . . if you don't think a Mirrored array is for you perhaps you should consider a large external Data drive for backups of your important data? (if you haven't got one already?) . . .

The PSU is from the local computer shop since gone bust I think its a 'powercool'
It's hard to say if it has a problem or not . . . powercool make good PSU's I think . . . if you had a PSU tester you could check it out to see if all the rails are good, failing that a replacement isn't that costly . . .

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w

£65.99 inc

It was bought on one of those Saturday panicks after the last one set on fire :D
Nice! :D

Crucial Real SSD C300 64GB looks like a good choice.. can I raid 2?
You could but I don't see why you would want too? . . . compared to your three year old clunky HDD a single SSD is going to be very quick! ;)

I wanted 7 ultimate because I've read remote access is available..
No probs, I think that is also included in Windows 7 Professional . . . try and get yourself the best price possible on that!

Cheers, last night I installed XP pro on an old HD so my daughter can do her homework

Later I tried changing the clock settings in the bios, it beeps like mad shuts down... beeps again... shuts down then boots.. CPUz says its standard.. am going to order the PSU, and that spinpoint F3 1TB, am beginning to wonder if the board was damaged when the last PSU blew up? maybe thats why it wont clock?

The Geil RAM I have is from OCUK and its 3 years old, it ran a clocked e6400 (3.2gig) on a ds3p for 2 years? :D

If that's the case then an OC bundle looks imminent :D

Maybe I'm asking for to much..

Hello Guy,

last night I installed XP pro on an old HD so my daughter can do her homework
Ok that's useful to know, it shows that the rest of the computer is still working well and that most likely the problem of the previous failed Windows load was indeed a problem with the WD HDD . . .

Later I tried changing the clock settings in the bios, it beeps like mad shuts down... beeps again... shuts down then boots.. CPUz says its standard..
Ok, what this tells me is that most likely you set incorrect overclock settings and the system had a spaz but finally managed to correct itself by setting back to standard . . . what "exact" settings did you change and do you actually know or understand what you are doing?

am going to order the PSU, and that spinpoint F3 1TB
Sounds like a plan for the HDD but I'm not sure if the PSU is needing to be replaced? . . .

am beginning to wonder if the board was damaged when the last PSU blew up?
using the case I have because its integrated in my furniture
A PSU " blew up"? . . . was this the same as the unit that "set on fire" or a different model? . . . . I'm starting to wonder if there is a problem with either you being extremely unlucky or perhaps there is an overheating problem with your system/chassis?

Couple of questions

  1. this Lian Li PC-7 chassis you have, does it have the PSU mounted at the top of the chassis or the bottom of the chassis?
  2. Does the Chassis that is "integrated in the furniture" have 6"-12" of clearance around it to allow for ventilation and is there any space for the heat to escape?
The board may have been damaged due to excessive heat and having PSU's catching on fire and blowing up but most modern PSU's have a safety system that keeps the components connected to it safe from electrical discharge and whatnot . . .

maybe thats why it wont clock?
I would assume if the board hasn't been actually burnt by fire that it is still good and working! :) . . . I think the problem is more likey you don't know what you are doing and are setting incorrect overclock parameters?

I'll be happy to help you get that chip overclocked to 3.0GHz at least . . . can you open a copy of CPU-z please and tell me what revission it is?

The Geil RAM I have is from OCUK and its 3 years old, it ran a clocked e6400 (3.2gig) on a ds3p for 2 years?
That tells me nothing other than you have GEIL DDR2-800 RAM that has managed to run at stock speed for two years . . .

If that's the case then an OC bundle looks imminent
Hmmm . . . that would be like replacing your washing machine because the fuse in the plug has blown . . . that would be like buying a new car because the fan-belt has worn out and snapped? :D . . . it typical for people that do not understand PC hardware to run out of patience, get frustrated and junk a whole system because they cannot trouble-shoot the problem . . . in the worst case scenario you may spend hundreds of pounds £££ you don't need to and find that your PC catches on fire or blows up again in 12 months because the chassis is non thermally advantaged and stuff in an area without sufficient ventilation . . .

I would say its worth your while trying to work out the root cause of this issue because otherwise it will plague you again and again . . .

If you can supply a couple of 800x600 digital photos of your system showing how its set-up, and the hardware inside of it I will have a much better idea of what is going on! . . . I will be happy to help you sort these problems out and get your system all ship-shape again . . .

The impression I'm getting is that the system is suffering from OverHeating and based on a historical experience of 15 years I have personally found that a PSU sitting at the top of a hot, badly ventilated system tend to expire rather quickly . . . excessive heat just wears them out! ;)

Maybe I'm asking for to much..
Lets see some photos of how and where the system is set-up and some detailed shots on the hardware inside . . .this won't take you long and could mean you don't need to spend hundreds of pounds of hardware you don't need and may help identify a problem you didn't previously consider!

When you remove the old HDD enter the serial number here to check the warranty . . . no receipt is necessary
Think WD require an Error Code to process any RMA of a faulty in-warranty product so OP needs to (if he can) run the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. Recommend you run it just to rule out if HD is faulty. Grab the bootable CD ISO image from their website

I know PC Power & Cooling make good PSUs but a quick Google of 'Powercool' & I can't really tell if its a good/reputable brand. Is it possible to provide the specs printed on the side...

But IMO go with what Big.Wayne has recommended so far

Oh your quite correct! . . . I did indeed confused PC Power & Cooling with 'Powercool' :o

If the PSU is "suspect" then it could be worth replacing! ;)

just £69.99, 650watts and four pci-e connectors for any future sli/crossfire thoughts.

That's not bad . . . for anyone that "may" actually need four PCI-E power leads it certainly makes the extra £5.00 worth paying over the 600w OCZ unit! . . . I hope the XFX price doesn't rise above £70 smackers! ;)

The only real modular alternative to that would be this for £13 pound cheaper . . . certainly limits ones future options but for those people running a standard system without a £300 pound Video card or a Multi-GPU set-up still fits the bill ££

Thanks everyone

here is my setup at home, I would prefer not to take the PSU out in case it breaks :D There are 5 HDD's 1 DVD in bays.. 1 large fan at the front , 1 at the rear plus a cooler on the Q6600

Sorry for the confusion over the last PSU it it sent a big spark out towards the microwave and a bit of smoke.. hence blew up/set on fire :D:D

I really appreciate your effort gents.. thank you.. I would love to clock this baby in firmware..

The image on my desktop was not taken by me ..... :D:D

Interesting, total cable jungle, five hot hard disks, semi blocked single "intake" fan, a PSU mounted at the top and conveniently sitting within 12 inches of a Microwave oven! :D

PSU's blowing up and catching on fire now do not suprise me, thanks for the pictures!
