Hello Guy,
last night I installed XP pro on an old HD so my daughter can do her homework
Ok that's useful to know, it shows that the rest of the computer is still working well and that most likely the problem of the previous failed Windows load was indeed a problem with the WD HDD . . .
Later I tried changing the clock settings in the bios, it beeps like mad shuts down... beeps again... shuts down then boots.. CPUz says its standard..
Ok, what this tells me is that most likely you set incorrect overclock settings and the system had a spaz but finally managed to correct itself by setting back to standard . . . what "exact" settings did you change and do you actually know or understand what you are doing?
am going to order the PSU, and that spinpoint F3 1TB
Sounds like a plan for the HDD but I'm not sure if the PSU is needing to be replaced? . . .
am beginning to wonder if the board was damaged when the last PSU blew up?
using the case I have because its integrated in my furniture
A PSU " blew up"? . . . was this the same as the unit that "set on fire" or a different model? . . . . I'm starting to wonder if there is a problem with either you being extremely unlucky or perhaps there is an overheating problem with your system/chassis?
Couple of questions
- this Lian Li PC-7 chassis you have, does it have the PSU mounted at the top of the chassis or the bottom of the chassis?
- Does the Chassis that is "integrated in the furniture" have 6"-12" of clearance around it to allow for ventilation and is there any space for the heat to escape?
The board may have been damaged due to excessive heat and having PSU's catching on fire and blowing up but most modern PSU's have a safety system that keeps the components connected to it safe from electrical discharge and whatnot . . .
maybe thats why it wont clock?
I would assume if the board hasn't been actually burnt by fire that it is still good and working!

. . . I think the problem is more likey you don't know what you are doing and are setting incorrect overclock parameters?
I'll be happy to help you get that chip overclocked to 3.0GHz at least . . . can you open a copy of
CPU-z please and tell me what revission it is?
The Geil RAM I have is from OCUK and its 3 years old, it ran a clocked e6400 (3.2gig) on a ds3p for 2 years?
That tells me nothing other than you have GEIL DDR2-800 RAM that has managed to run at stock speed for two years . . .
If that's the case then an OC bundle looks imminent
Hmmm . . . that would be like replacing your washing machine because the fuse in the plug has blown . . . that would be like buying a new car because the fan-belt has worn out and snapped?

. . . it typical for people that do not understand PC hardware to run out of patience, get frustrated and junk a whole system because they cannot trouble-shoot the problem . . . in the worst case scenario you may spend hundreds of pounds £££ you don't need to and find that your PC catches on fire or blows up again in 12 months because the chassis is non thermally advantaged and stuff in an area without sufficient ventilation . . .
I would say its worth your while trying to work out the root cause of this issue because otherwise it will plague you again and again . . .
If you can supply a couple of 800x600 digital photos of your system showing how its set-up, and the hardware inside of it I will have a much better idea of what is going on! . . . I will be happy to help you sort these problems out and get your system all ship-shape again . . .
The impression I'm getting is that the system is suffering from OverHeating and based on a historical experience of 15 years I have personally found that a PSU sitting at the top of a hot, badly ventilated system tend to expire rather quickly . . . excessive heat just wears them out!
Maybe I'm asking for to much..
Lets see some photos of how and where the system is set-up and some detailed shots on the hardware inside . . .this won't take you long and could mean you don't need to spend hundreds of pounds of hardware you don't need and may help identify a problem you didn't previously consider!
