if it's for gaming, a dual core is probably better than a quad, because it'll have higher clock speeds, and most games use one core, some use two, almost none use more than two.

mobo: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

cpu: E7200

RAM: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

that's £190 for the mobo, cpu + RAM

maxtor HDDs have a bad reputation, and this drive:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...nt F1 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502IJ)
is the most highly recommended drive around, they are meant to be fantastic, and it's the same price as the maxtor =0

if you want to overclock, it'd be worth throwing in an arctic freezer 7 pro for £17

Also, new graphics cards are out in a few days, so it's worth seeing what prices of the 8800Gt are like in a couple of weeks.

I would maybe add the OS here, but for mouse and keyboard they can be brought cheaply from elsewhere.
But as that monitor isnt in stock, i would say wait for a bit as the new cards out soon and should push the prices down of current cards im hoping.

Don't think that 400W PSU would cut it tbh, case and PSU for £25 not exactly the best!

Think you'll need second hand.

nope but then 500 isn't a lot. 400 is big enough. just depends how stable it is. it doesn't say what psu it is. BUt i agree 2nd hand is the best way.

There's this in MM add a monitor,and keyboard/mouse
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17883191

19" Viewsonic VX912 lcd monitor £70 in MM as well.

Here's the best I could muster without you having to go second hand:

However, if you were willing to spend a bit more I'd go for a P35 mobo and stick another 2GB of RAM in there.

thanks guys ill look into these, just a few questions

Any point in going for 62bit over 32bit?
Also are the 8800's better than the 9600?

Yes, using 32bit limits the amount of RAM that you can use to somewhere around 3.2gb.

The 8800GT is generally regarded as better than the 9600GT, yes.

The processor specified is 64-bit so having an OS to match means that the processor doesnt have to translate instructions down to 32-bit.

Also, if you ever wanted to upgrade your memory to over 3gb you would need a 64-bit OS as 32-bit cannot address more than 3gb.

If you want to stick to £500 then buy at least some of the parts second hand. The monitor, gfx card and cpu should be easy to find and should knock a £100 of that total.

Not if you want those components. My build was about as cheapskate as possible really. As mentioned second hand would be your other option.

Just save a little bit more as £500 is not really enough. You will just regret that you didn't wait IMO.

The monitor is what bumps up a big chunk of the price. Id be grabbing a free 20"+ CRT off someone then saving up later :D
