£500 RAM, CPU and Mobo

Can't disagree with that at all :D

To be fair I’m 37 with two kids - 4 years and another at 5 months.

This will likely be the the final swan song for me - the wife already moans should I have the audacity to play 30mins to an hour perhaps two or three nights a week once the little ones are tucked up safe.

She would rather I was sat on the sofa watching thrilling television such as bake off or some drivel related to wedding dresses or similar.

By the time I’m 40 i suspect she will probably get her way. That terrifies me and this last little upgrade is my two fingered salute to the future that she has planned for me.

Haha love it. After an identical life changing event I can sympathise, difficult to find the time but it’s a nice little escape. Long gone are the days when you could spend all evening gaming.

Very similar upgrade to me, hope you also enjoy it. Make sure you flash to the latest bios, there have been a few over the last couple of weeks.

thats good advice - just do it via the msi website and load from a formatted memory stick?

Jesus guys, stand up for yourselves. I don't game as much as I could when I was younger, but I still get 1 or 2 nights a week of 3h+ plus gaming, and that is having 2 children, doing things at home, and being a director with a local education org in the evenings!

God I know the feeling, my ex couldn't understand why I preferred gaming to some lobotomy inducing dreary 'entertainment' such as 'Strictly'!

Just for general reference:

1. Always build for the first time outside of your case, use a table or something. Saves a lot of potential faffing about and it confirms whether everything works or not, as sometimes you can have a short due to the case.
2. Double check all connections, sometimes you'll do something silly like not fully plugging something in correctly.
3. Don't panic, remember everything you've bought is new and under warranty. If there's a problem methodically test where you can, as you're now doing with the RAM I imagine.

Let us know how things go with the RAM, fingers crossed.

Have you tried both sticks in the second slot, and if so does it always post with said sticks in said slot?

If it does I'd lean toward a MOBO issue, if it doesn't I'd lean towards a RAM issue.

That said, if you can get the system running even with just a single stick, I would recommend updating the bios to the most recent and trying everything over again. It might just be a flaky mobo bios, after that's done you can start considering how to deal with whatever the problem is should the issues persist.

Awesome.

Considering the process you've went through to figure it out, I'd contact the people you bought it from and detail your process, maybe even link this thread. They might send some new stuff out as a gesture of good will while you're still sending your current back.

Glad you figured it out mate, trust me I know that panic when you've spent some cash on a thing you really want and it doesn't work the way you expect. Worse again when money is a little tight due to little ones or wife-strings! =p

So much this - I now have some rather fancy Corsair RGB ram in my system - it defaults to 3000mhz so I’ll overclock it and see how far i get

How far can I push the 3600x on average?
