ok guys wondered if you could give me a hand here. the gf's old man has asked me to sort him out a pc. all he needs it for is web surfing, riping/burning cd's/dvds, something to help him use his mp3 player, and office tasks (word, excel etc)

his budget is £500 but this must include everything, even a 17" flat pannel/ cheap speakers, mouse and kb, pref a gig of ram: - the lot.

now bear in mind he wont be touching games on this thing so feel free to skimp on the gfx card, and we are talking basic pc functions here.

one more thing:- for this price and the functions he wants to use it for would i be better going for an off the chelf system from a retailer? thanks guys

Check out the cpu/mobo/ram bundles, you know they'll be compatible, and thats half the PC already decided.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Bundles_339.html

Toughest decisions will be the case and PSU really.

Plenty of 17" LCD monitors at around £150, cheaper if you're willing to go B-Grade.

My friend had whole system built for under £500, only thing he didnt buy were headphones. **** system with the crappiest PCIe card on the market then, but it runs fine for him since he only plays ancient games.

No swearing, read the FAQ.

A tiny bit over but you get a very good system for your money.

Dureth's specification seems pretty good, I can't see any areas that could really be cut down without compromising performance. You could go for a Sempron 64 based system if the budget is really important which would be fine for most tasks but the specification above offers upgrade potential as well.

Artheas, could you edit the swearing out of your post as well please :)

^^

Er Monstermunchs spec has no Windows XP, no speakers, no keyboard, no mouse. Apart from that its the same as mine but with a bigger hard drive.

The difference being my spec' will actually function as a PC.
