The time has come to upgrade my pc, i am currently running a 2600xp, 1gb ram, 6800GT graphics card.

With my £500 i need, a new motherboard, a new graphics card and a new cpu and ram and vista home premium oem

I already have a decent 460 watt psu+chieftec case+harddrives and dvdr drive and also have a sound blaster audigy soundcard along with a Nova-T 500 tv card.

the computer will be used for casual image editing, gaming, recording digital tv

Cheers for any help!!

This might do, Will_3rd's has the better graphics card but this is closer to the budget and the graphics card is still pretty decent. :)

that sounds lovely!!

no need for the 8800gts at the moment, and the ram should be ok, not looking to do any overclocking atm.
Would there be much "real world" difference between the 2 processors (1.86/1.80) and is it an advantage to have intel 1.80 over a amd x2 4200?

thankyou...

The two C2Ds AFAIK perform about the same, but should have a slight advantage over the AMD at stock.

Spot on, the 4300 is slightly cheaper and has a higher multiplier which should (in theory at least) make it easier to overclock but both should be roughly equivalent to an X2 4400/4600 at stock. :)

just been reading up on the overclocking potential of the two processors, if i bought the 6400 for example, to get the full overclocking potential from it (3ghz or so is easily reachable without losing stability i have read) would i also need 1066mhz ram to go with it? this would mean spending even more.... :(

i see, should have read it proberly!! would the stock cooler be ok or if i am now thinking of overclocking should i consider a beefier one? which one do you recommend?

The 4300 has a 9x multiplier and the 6300 has a 7x multiplier so the 4300 should be easier to get a good overclock from however it can need a fair few volts to do so apparantly. With a 6300 and PC6400 Ram, while running the Ram within specification you should be able to get 2.8ghz (7x400, that being the multiplier x actual Ram speed), with a 4300 and PC6400 you could in theory get 3.6ghz (9x400, however you'd need better cooling, probably a lot more volts and that assumes the chip is capable anyway) but it is far from guaranteed, aiming for 3.0ghz should be quite do-able though I think.

Maybe take a look at the big thread in the CPU forum on the 4300 as those guys know a whole lot more than me about the subject. :)
