5090 worth it?

Must be crazy buying at these prices . It better be worth it
Upgrade cycles seem to have slowed right down though. I'm replacing an RTX3080 bought 5 years ago. If the RTX5090 lasts me 5+ years then I'm OK with it. I think it will probably will.

I used to feel like I needed to upgrade GPU every 2 years

When the 5090 first was announced, people were shocked at the RRP.

"Two grand for a GPU!?!? They wont sell many at that price!! Way over priced!!"

Fast forward to 2026, the RRP looks like a deal now

Glad I picked up mine when I did, sold my 4090 to get the 5090. So it wasn't bad on my wallet.

Cycles will be slower now by default.

Usually we expect to hear rumblings about the 6090 about now but we know that's way off due to the RAM shortage and NVIDIA focusing on AI.

Yeah if you break it down into years and months it don't workout too bad, especially if you make good use of it.

It depends.

I have had my 5090 since April last year. It runs games without fail or worry at highest settings. No frame gen magic or DLSS nonsense, just clean frames at highest settings. Mine (Zotac Solid) runs quiet with good temps, and I haven't seen power spikes like I have at times on past top-end cards. I also have a homebrew LLM running. It's a great card.

That said, I don't need this level of performance and still ask myself often if the money was worth it. I had a 9070XT for a bit and the noticeable difference between super high settings and high-medium is negligible. That was also a superb card... That was 1/3 the cost of my 5090.

In short, no one needs 5090 performance. But if you have the clams and you are knocking around in AI, it's the best.

Interesting take, I would argue @ 5k2k you would 'need' a 5090 if your playing new titles? what RES monitor are you currently using?

Coolest card to put in your signature was the Titan V, I still have mine.

The way the PC hardware market is going we might see future 'flagship' GPU releases from Nvidia with OCUK owners threads with as many people in possession of the cards as was the case with the Titan V...

It was a whole two people, including yourself, wasn't it?

Yes it was a bit sad

I think the other guy was Vega from the States.

The really sad thing about it was the Titan V was £2700 at launch, the current 5090s have got that beat by a wide margin.

The other things interesting about the Titan V was it was a full fat die that in physical size was even bigger than any of the dies on Blackwell cards yet used only about 275w and was easy to keep cool.

It also used HBM2 memory which was not cheap and it still sold for less than the current 5090s.

The world has gone crazy.

now i have bought a 5090 i am sure theyll announce something soon  it be just typical ha
The AI bubble will burst and Nvidia will panic and start selling the 5090s for half price. That's the sort of thing that usually happens just after I buy something.

Conversely, shortly after I decide I don't need 64GB RAM right now and I'll just upgrade as and when I do...

when i see the new james bond game requires 32gb ram ( now confirmed false) for 1080p i glad i got 64gb ram lol.

Nobody seems to have mentioned the main benefit of having a 5090 yet which is you get to put it in your signature so everyone on the forum knows how cool you are.
These days I believe putting 64GB of RAM in your signature is the new 5090. Those that have both must really be overcompensating! :D

I heard a rumour saying you can do this without even buying one

I wish I'd got 128GB. I'm running AI on my PC and it's frequently bottlenecking on 64GB. I really want to buy a 5090 too, but the prices are so disgusting. I's struggling with the prices. I just don't want to spend that sort of money on a card. What happens if you drop it?

The price has gone up another 1k almost since I bought the 5090, I still have not fitted the 5090 yet either. Just sitting there in the box at the moment

That’s the key point that many miss. Most people aren’t just starting fresh on 5090’s. They’re using their previous high end cards to fund most of the upgrade.

Some people paid only a few hundred to upgrade.

I’m curious to see what the landscape will look like when the 6090 launches in terms of pricing, and what sort of money 5090’s will fetch.

The way things are going if you bought a 5090 before the price increases you’ll likely get all your money back when it comes to selling. My cards gone up by £1200 compared to what I paid.

I’m sure there was a guy on here that sold his 4090 for more than he paid for it 3 years ago. So he gamed for “free”…

This is exactly what my friend did.

Sold his 4090 just before the craziness, got more than he paid for it on release. Didn't waste anytime buying the 5090 straight after.

Happened to be a Chinese person who purchased it (and mine too when I sold it) Said he was taking it China because of the restrictions on Nvidia GPU's being sold there.

Win, win for everyone :)

Did you see gamer nexus visiting China to turn a 4090 into 48gb
