Hi.

It’s my dads 50th birthday soon and I want to buy/do something that will be somewhat memorable instead of the usual yearly present.

I do have a few ideas but it is always good to get a few more suggestions that I wouldn’t have thought about - maybe from people similar age to my dad.

He doesn’t really want for much in the sense that he isn’t materialistic, so buying things like a nice watch or other accessories isn’t him. He doesn’t drink or smoke. The one hobby he does have us the usual goto present every year.

What he does like is motorsport, the occasional football game, tinkering with any old rubbish he can find and watching tv after a hard day at work.

So far I’m thinking about a driving experience day and the £9.99 Casio watch :D he wants...

Fire away!

Book him an hours flying lesson. Not quite the same as your normal blat round a track.

Am only about 2 years younger

I like an 65" OLED TV with new 4K AV receiver and a Kef T305 5.1 speaker setup

If that any help :p

Awesome idea but I’m not sure how this will go down - he’s convinced he doesn’t like flying but has never been on a plane.

One can never have enough shiny tools!

This is true, tools were bought for Xmas last year. I want something he can say later on in life “I did this for my 50th”.

I’d like the same and I’m 20 years younger than you :D

Buy him something that is the same age as him -1967 Gold Sovereign or go for the flying experience. If you have a gliding club near you, you can usually get a package deal of 2 or 3 launches/flights for well under £100.

I bought a vintage 1972 bottle of red wine when we were touring France a few years back (paid about 90 euros). I plan to open it for my 50th in 4 years time. I've got it stored in my utility room at an angle to keep the cork moist and i hope it tastes nice when i eventually open it ......

Fantastic idea. I did this for my 29th at Blackpool and it was incredible fun though scary just how much they let me have the controls for take off and landing.

As I have been touting to everyone I can find, I think a day's blacksmithing course could be a good idea. Plenty of manly tools, fire, dirt, and you walk away with a bit of metal that should hopefully resemble something. I did this for my 30th. As awesome as it was, if your dad has never flown, this may not be the way to introduce him to it!
Most people's first flight is on a passenger plane like a jumbo or holiday jet. Mine was in a 1950's dakota.
My flying lesson was in what can only be described as a 2 seater goldfish bowl with wings!

Be a bit like your first introduction to motor vehicles being on a moped when everyone else is in luxury in a car!

I sent my dad on the Orient Express for his 60th, although I wanted to send him across Europe on it, but being a tightwad he didn't own a passport! He also hadn't been on a plane.

Not sure about the flying thang , [ unless you want your inheritance early ] why tempt the gods of doom with a potential Buddy Holly style fireball ?

Nope, a box set of The Sweeney, a bag of Midget Gems and a chunky Fair Isle cardy.

if he likes motorsports and you're thinking car experience, then why not do something different from the usual track ones? Why not rent a Caterham for a weekend? Combine with a (Groupon?) offer of a weekend away in some hotel for him and his partner? Can also get him the Caterham lego car as a quirky momento of the weekend?

This is the thing, I don't know if he will actually enjoy it and I know he wont be looking forward to it on the run up. I could always fly him somewhere on a commercial flight but it won't be to a holiday destination, he also doesn't have a passport...

As for the hot air balloon, he wont even step foot in one!

Will check out the blacksmith course as that could be a good shout.

This is something I was hoping for, going to have to so some research on the hire. If I booked a track experience it would have been a weekend thing anyway.
