I was looking at doing a chain replacement, along with the sprockets on my speed triple. I believe the OEM chain is a 530, and the internet says that 530 chains tend to be on 1000cc+ bikes, with 525s on 600s. However, the internet also says that smaller, lighter chains = better performance, perhaps at the cost of faster wear.

So, should I put a 525 chain on my speed triple (2012). Will I notice the difference, both in terms of wear, or performance?

I doubt you'd notice tbh

if anything id want a thicker tougher longer lasting chain on there

it will wear out and stretch quicker, performance gains would be miniscule

No point in a 525 conversion unless you are a track rat and like messing about with gearing , but you'll need a quick release carrier as well for that.

Would I be right thinking most track conversions would go to a 520 conversion rather than 525?

Seem to remember doing that on my 600RR, and with mates running 1000's. 525 kits used to be a lot more expensive too hence there being 520 and 530 conversions used in many cases depending if it was for road or track use.

My Aprilia RSV, my Fireblade and my Benelli Tornado all have 525 chains. The track people usually go down to 520 for the small weight benefit.

520 track use, if you are trying to get as much weight loss and performance as possible, otherwise stick to stock, a big fat chain always looks good on bigger bikes anyway :p
