Hey guys,

I need some help, my brothers machine (XP) says that his user account (Windows login screen) has 533 unread messages – under his login icon and username, before he loads Windows – you know where I mean :p

Anyway, he hasn't actually got any emails, unread or other wise. He periodically uses OE but that had no messages in it today, and sometimes Thunderbird – that also didn’t have any messages?

Most of the time he accesses his emails through his ISP's webmail portal. So generally, he never actually downloads anything to his machine?

There are two other accounts on the machine, one for his wife and one for my nephew – they're both password protected and they were out when I was there, so I didn't get the opportunity to keep them out – not that there’s any reason why his account would be displaying other peoples number of messages, but hey this is Windows we're talking about :D

I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard of anything like this happening before or knows of a solution to the problem?

Cheers,

SW.

If you click on Unread messages it will tell you which email account it's getting the unread messages from.

I don't know if this is a "solution", but using TweakUI you can completely disable Unread Messages on the Welcome Screen.
