54mbps vs 108mbps

I posted a while ago to ask which router would be the best for a 20mb virgin media connection. 90% of the responses said this one : Linksys WRT54GL

today I finaly got my money back from the shop, and they told me the reason my router was crap, is because a virgin media connection of 20 meg, needs 108mbps, because of "authentication" or something. I bought loads of stuff from this guy in the pas 4 years, and I have always been happy, and he never lied.

so is this true? do we need a 108mbps router instead?

its for 5 people; browsing, online gameing and torrents.

That is NOT true, because I am in a student house of 5 at the moment, and although 3 of us are using wired connections, the other 2 always use the wireless and it works fine with the that router...
 
As long as the capacity of the router is greater than your line speed (20Mbs) then it should cope fine. 54Mbps is more than enough, although you would need to have a good signal to maintain that speed. Maybe he was thinking that the 108Mbps had a better signal strength?
 
Strong signal, throughput of a 54Mbps is ~27Mbps. So shouldn't be a problem. Might be worth going higher if you plan on shifting files and stuff at the same time, as it'll give you a bit more headroom.

the 108Mbps router will only have any effect if the access cards are all 108Mbps too (most probably have to be same brand, as 108Mbps is usually proprietary).
 
54Mb wi-fi may actually be marginal for a 20Mb/s link. That 54Mb/s is actually the combined speed in both direction so is really only 27Mb/s in each direction whereas the 20Mb/s is one direction (AFAIK). Add in quite a lot of overhead for wi-fi and you could well come down below 20Mb/s.

I'd be interested in seeing throughput figures for 54Mb/s wi-fi into a 20Mb/s broadband.

also, I see your E6600 is on 4.5 ghz, wtf.

do you have a link to your 3d mark scores / pics of your pc?

( I cant pm people on this forum, hence the little off topic)

Actually that sig is out of date now, just bought a Q6600 (G0 stepping), currently running it at 3.6ghz @ 1.35v :) My mobo is holding me back with FSB though :mad: Won't let me go higher than 416mhz and even then it isn't massively stable. Currently RMA'd 4gb's of Crucial ballistix 6400 ram aswell, so waiting for that to come back... :

Just the CPU, coolers like mine used to be produced by a company called nVentiv - check out this link

If you fancy building one yourself, check this out. It isn't something to take on lightly though. It will cost money and is not conventional by any means :p

Basically a modified freezer, where all the coldness is focused on a small area the size of a cpu heatspreader.

I had the Mach II GT but got a friend of mine to blend in two different gases and swap a few components out so that it copes with very hot quad core temps :)
