Chaps,

My old man finally wants to update his ageing TV, as it's starting to show some issues on screen.

I immediately said get an OLED as that seems to be the 'in thing' for new TV's, and is the best technology at the moment......or is it?

I'm not really too up to date with new tech in TVs, so I wouldn't mind some quick opinions.

I initially said get the LG OLED55B6V Smart 4k Ultra HD HDR 55" OLED TV

He's just been in the Indian take away shop name (not sure if I can say them here!) and they recommended the SONY BRAVIA KD55XD9305BU Smart 3D 4k Ultra HD HDR 55" LED TV.

It's £500 cheaper (not too much of an issue for my Dad), but it's LED, not OLED. Does that matter?

I had a quick look in the shop the other day, at the LG, and was simply stunned by how dark the OLEDs can go, and the IQ in general. I'm sure the LEDs are great too, but for a new TV that will last him years, is it better to get the latest tech now?

Thanks

Ok thanks.

Doesn't have to be the LG. From a quick look that seemed to have rave reviews.

I guess the question would be is it really worth going with OLED, ignoring the price.

What pros does LED have?

Well I've got the Panasonic TX-P50GT50 and I'm still really impressed with that tbh.

The LG OLED55B6V is still my top pick. If not, then the Samsung UE55KS8000 is second pick. There is 'only' a £400 price difference between them, so for my Dad who buys a new TV every half decade or more, I think that's not an issue.

The Indian place has a 5 year guarantee on pretty much every 'high end' TV I've looked at, so life span is a non issue to be honest.

I'll do a bit more reading, especially comparing the best LCDs with the current OLEDs.

Thanks again

Really how so?

If the price is the same, an extra years guarantee is fair enough.....but the customer service can't be that bed. If you need to return a TV, they replace it.....job done. Not much more they can do is there?

I can't see an issue in buying from Currys to be honest. Sure there might be some horror stories but what store doesn't?!

LG is still no 1 for me.

Picked up an LG OLED55B6V earlier today for my old man. So far looks stunning, and thats just on normal Sky HD!

Sorting out Sky Q 4K for him soon.

The blacks are stunning! They are literally black!

Thanks for the advise though chaps

Glad I went with the LG. Should be future proofed for a while!
I'm sure there will be better OLEDs in the future, although I'm not sure what they could improve drastically!
