So, got a machine to build for a mate. The only thing he said was "a good all rounder good wireless with dual band a reasonable graphics and good processor. Ideally good ram and rest what you can get. Not bothered what DVD drive is a cheep writer is fine. Don't need keyboard/monitor and mouse"

Hes happy with 2nd hand but i would prefer to get him new, am i missing anything here or is there better to be had

You don't need an OS ? Also I would swap the HDD for an ssd and buy a HDD in few months.

OS hes fine with, i was looking at an SSD but they seem on the steep side for the amount of storage but i can ask him what he thinks.

take a look on the bay might be able to pick a 7950 or 7970 up for that price.

This'll be a lot better for gaming at least. Although if he has plans to upgrade within a year, maybe the i5-4690K with Z97 is best so he can just upgrade the GPU. I'd still try and squeeze a 2GB card in from the get go.
