550w Corsiar with a GTX980 - Good idea?

Personally I wouldn't.

How old is that PSU? The reviews I've found date back to 2008. If it is getting to that sort of age, then the components will have aged and degraded. Given that it could only output ~490W on the 12V rail as new, I wouldn't be confident that now it would be able to support a 980 and everything else without being pushed close to its' limit.

Not now I wouldn't. These came out around 9 years ago so really could do with replacing by now.

The RMx is usually available for the same price and it is a better psu. The RM is a bit pricey for what you get, but it will run a GTX 980 perfectly fine.

As above, RMx and RMi are excellent buys, but RM internally overpriced for what they are. Usually get the far better EVGA GS or G2 for the same price
