Hi there,

I have got a core i7 (920), geforce GTX 285 with 2x(4GB) DDR3, was just wondering whether my 550W PSU will work or do I need to upgrade.

I'm not planning on overclocking/SLIing (yet).

cheers :)

I have a core i7 system & my Corsair HX520 is fine but I have a 4850 GPU which would use less power than your 285... so it may be ok but Id see what others here would suggest.

There are plenty of cheap and nasty 550W psu's around that can only put out 300W of 12V, which wouldn't be enough. If you aren't overclocking, about 350W of 12V would be about right. So 400W with headroom. If the PSU is old (3 years), then a little more again.

As mentioned above you really need to know the make and model.

The cheaper ones quote peak wattages that are only attained for a fraction of a second, so the continuous wattage of a cheap 550w supply could be closer to 300w.

yup fpr for a modular if you are they seem so much better for cable management my case is put to shame by all those unnecessary extra cables:S
