So, I have a living room machine hooked up to an LG 65CX OLED. I've not been using the rig too much in the pasts couple of years (life, console gaming, the usual suspects) and am now looking to make this my main gaming rig. I've got a grand or so to use from selling some of my older console stuff but no strict budget limit and obviously could pull in a bit of cash from selling parts that are rendered obsolete from the upgrade. Current spec as follows:
  • 5600x
  • 3070
  • 16gb 3600 DDR4
  • B550-I
  • SF600 PSU
  • NR200P Case
Given I'm about 2.5-3m away from the OLED, do I care about pushing into 4k territory or should I am for 1440p and higher framerates?

Do I stay on AM4 and upgrade the 5600x to a 5700x3d and upgrade the GPU to a 4070 Ti Super or similar? Do I move to AM5? Do I wait for Blackwell to launch? Upgrading to 32gb of ram is also a consideration.

Opinions please folks.

1440p high fps is easier to achieve than 4k especially in modern games otherwise you mite need to sink most of your budget into the GPU.

To be fair your 3070 should handle 1440p games giving 60fps so I would hold fire and see how it goes.

Would upgrade to 32gb regardless, as for cpu yes the 5700x3d can give a good uplift but having a 5600x would be looking at benchmarks before.

120hz on the CX Oled makes me want to push the frames a little higher though. I should mention I also use the living room as my VR setup, so there's also that to consider.

So a faster GPU is must, 32gb is £60 so no big deal and you can get a 5700x3d for £135 but they are imports.

4070ti will give you a significant boost over your 3070 while but you may need a new PSU.

1440p benchmarks.

Thanks for this, the performance upgrade does look spicy. I think I'm covered on PSU - PartPicker has me sat at 510w or so and benches seem to say total system consumption would be 400w or so whilst gaming. I have a decent platinum rated PSU.

Next decision is to wait for Blackwell or not I guess. Not like I need to upgrade now, but do we ever truly need to upgrade? :D
