I wasn't sure which thread to put this in, but it is cooling related so...

Recently upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5600X with a Noctua NH-L9x65 SE-AM4 cooler and set the power profile to 'balanced' as per recommendations.

It was happily sitting at idle temps of 32 degC until a week or so ago.
Now, when the machine is left for a little while, idle temps sit at around 47-52 degC but here's the bizarre bit - if I bring up task manager and close it straight away the temps start dropping down to 32 again.

There was a Windows update installed that coincides with the start of this behaviour, but the power profile advanced settings seem unchanged.

Anyone else having the same issue with a fix?

The Noctua has been on it since day one so I can't say how it compares to the stock cooler.

This 32 you saw - was when it wasn't ramped on your previous cooler - and then it went back after you closed the task manager with your new cooler - temperatures will fluctuate on Ryzen which is normal behaviour.
Here's a typical scenario - switch on, Core Temp in system tray shows 32 across all cores while doing some internet stuff, news, emails, etc. I come back to it a while later and temps have risen to 47. Hit ctrl-shift-esc for task manager*, quit out of it and temps immediately drop to 32.

* processes are sorted cpu% descending - the top one displays "System Interrupts" or "System" for a split second (with Power Usage showing red "high/very high") and disappears straight away.

What's your maximum temperatures under load? In the 90s? Mine is 66c in prime and 70s while gaming as said. Is yours the same or in the 90s+? If it isn't then just enjoy your rig and not worry about it.
I just checked some games (Cyberpunk 2077, Project Cars 3, Read Dead Redemption 2, Ghost Recon Wildlands) and temps sat between 55-66. I also ran Prime95 torture test as well and it hit 80. Exited out and temps dropped to 32 after a few seconds. In the course of writing this reply they've crept back up to 48. Did the task manager thing again and they've settled back to 32....

Tbh, like you said, it's not the end of the world, but I'm curious as to why it quite happily sits at 32 for a while then jumps up by 50% while supposedly idling (ok, it's obviously doing something), but doesn't drop back again unless I do the task manager thing.

Thought I'd post an update to this.

I bit the bullet and bought an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240mm.
The only stumbling block was the cooler, or rather the radiator, wouldn't fit nicely in my Antec P193 case, so I upgraded to a Fractal Design Define R6.

It now sits idling at 32-37 degC, but again, if I bring up task manager those temps immediately drop to around 25-27 with the top cover removed.
With the cover on and running a Cinebench test render it hit 45 degC, so I'm more than happy.
