5600x vs 5800x

OK, so I bought a 5600x on Wed after doing a little bit of research.

Received the 5600x on Fri. On the same day I receive the CPU, Far Cry 6 specs are revealed and CPU requirements are quite high.

Now I am at 1440p and the recommended CPU is indeed a 5600x but I am 75% tempted to send the CPU back and get a 5800x just for peace of mind that it will have a bit more longevity.

However the reason I even went with the 5600x over the 5800x is because generally there is about 5% between the CPUs.

However the Far Cry 6 specs worry me that maybe future titles will indeed need more powerful CPUs moving forward.

I guess I have no option here because I will always have that nagging feeling that I should have got the 5800x if I keep the 5600x.

What postal service do people use to send back expensive hardware to OcUK?

I need to use "recorded, insured and signed-for services".

I was going to use DPD next day delivery but... it looks like they would expect a telephone number and would be providing the 'recipient' with updates.

As I am sending back to OcUK there is no recipient really.

So what service do I use?

DPD to insure an item of 250 was going to cost around £22 to send it back.

Royal Mail special delivery with insurance up to £500 looks about £8.

Will a NHD14 cooler cope with a 5900x?

I still don't know what to do.

Keep the 5600x or send it back.

Issue is a 5900x is over 50% more cores over a 5800x and is currently only 25% more cost.

I should use my brain and not fall in to that trap though. A 5900x over a 5800x in games doesn't offer that much more.

You could look at it this way...keep the 5600x and put the £200 you save in the piggy bank...in 2/3 years time crack it open and buy the next CPU equivalent , which will prob outperform the 5900x by then anyway in games

5600x outperforms 3900x from YouTube above

Yea. Its a great value CPU no doubt.

But this video has me concerned regarding CPU usage compared to the 5800x.

In some game there is about 30% difference CPU usage between the chips. Doesn't bode well for future titles.

TBF though 57-58% usage was max in the most CPU demanding titles at 4k, that's only 3 and a bit cores .. Why would this game require over double ??

What I am getting at here is that the 5600x and the 5800x might be comparable in games until the usage on the 5600x starts getting to 80% + and then you start getting stuttering.

These benchmarks make me feel better though. Practically no difference between the CPUs.

However like I mentioned above is what is not being show in this review is the % usage on the CPU.

Mathematically is doesn't make sense to swap a 5600x for a 5800x.

A 5800x offers 33% more cores for 50% more price.

A 5900x on the other hand offers 50% more cores for 25% more money over a 5800x.

My only consideration is I don't want to be caught out in future titles that need 8 cores to render RT to its max as I do have a 3080 at the end of the day.

And what about a game like BF2042 with 128 player maps.

That's going to need a beefy CPU. And I noticed in the video above CPU usage is quite high on the 5600x in BF V.

I suppose another way for me to look at is is this, I was happy enough with my 3700x and a 5600x is faster so what am I complaining about.

(Upgrading because of ram instability and I thought why not upgrade CPU whilst I am taking the CPU cooler off. Please 3700x can go in anther pc.)

Keep the 5600X and by the time the 5600X seems it is not enough for a few titles you will be able to grab a used 5900X for cheap or the new version coming out in December with more L3 Cache.

Right now I would say keep the 5600X or just yolo and pick up a 5900X. I got mine for £420 ages ago :D

You could wait for the one that will have the extra L3 cache, but that will likely cost a lot more cash

The way they've shaped the market the choice is 5600x or 5900x.

I can do a 5900x it's just from reviews and benchmarks the performance difference doesn't warrant the cost.

My only concern is seeing up to 80% usage in same games on the 5600x when watching YouTube comparison videos. Has me concerned especially for a game like BF 2042 which will double the player count.

I only upgraded as my ram has not been stable since introducing 3080 so I bought some new plug and play ram. Then I thought by the time I'm gonna take the cpu cooler off maybe I can do a cheap little upgrade.

Then Far Cry 6 specs come out and I see how high cpu requirements are and now I am in this zone where I don't know if I should keep the 5600x go 5800x, grab 5900x or wait for refresh.

Especially in light of BF2042.

The big YouTubers make it seem like a no brainer to get a 5600x instead of anything else. But what they aren't telling you is what CPU % usage where those chips running at. Because that's also very important.

I'm thinking now just to keep the 5600x.

The extra £100 isn't worth it for a 5800x.

And a 5900x is 80% more expensive for 100% more cores/threads.

And just as I say that I see videos on YouTube showing 70-80% cpu usage on a 5600x in BFV.

I can see spikes to 70-80% in this video with a 5600x in BFV.

Have a look at min 9:19 onwards.

So yea its definitely sitting around 80% cpu usage.

This has me worried for BF 2042.

@Alan McFall Do you have BFV to test?

The other question to answer is what happens when the CPU is at 100%?

Just a CPU bottleneck or will you start to get stutter?

Because if its just a case that the CPU is a bottleneck, if the fps are 150 + etc then its hardly a big issue.

Stutter on the other hand would be a big issue.
