Chinese based company, Yoison Technology, has unveiled the Apple Peel 520 which allows voice calls from an iPod Touch. The "Peel" is a skin for the Touch containing a battery, SIM card and dock connector. It will retail for $57.

The inventor of the product, known only by his screen name, "Maxpy," invented the Peel because the iPhone is, "Too expensive in China." The iPhone costs between $588-$740 while the iPod Touch costs around $235.

150 Peels have been pre-sold on the Chinese internet marketplace, Taobao.com. It remains to so be seen what impact the Peel will have on Chinese iPhone sales or what Apple´s response will be to the product.

With Jailbreaking now legitimised, and the fact that this doesn't tinker with the unit per se, I can't see how Apple can stop it?

I love seeing inventions like this, good on the bloke :).

It might not be perfect but it shows how much of a rip of the iphone is. It is just an ipod touch at the end of the day. Glad someone has done this.

Loving this terminology;

"users will have to break into the software of the iPod in order to download the necessary applications"

Those glitches mentioned are quite serious, and as said no 3g support so the call function is rudimentary at best. At least for the moment it doesn't look like it can be a long term reliable solution.

Plus does it need to be JBed first? And what happens if you update iPod touch firmware?

Anybody else think there will be an 'essential' update from Apple within days of its release that will stop it from working with most iTouch?
