570 or 480?

Ok so I've read some reviews, and I get that the 480 run hotter and chews power like bankers chew money at bonus time :p

I know the 570 runs cooler and needs less power, but what about performance, the same? The price of these models are similar. I'm not too worried about heat these 480s generate or their power consumption <I may want to go sli later with 2nd card, not sure!> , i have the 800d case & AX1200 for power. I think my question really is does the 570 out perform the 480 on the single card solution and later on in sli? :confused:

And who knows, will the 480 be discontinued or will the price drop?
 
I went with the 480 because it was £40 cheaper and had more memory.

I have 5 PCs in my gaming room so noise did not matter and my 902 case meant heat was not an issue :) Running happily @ 875mhz so I would 100% choose it again.
 
Depends on how much cheaper can you get a GTX480 instead of GTX570...

If the price is very close, and you only game at 1920 res and not higher, then you'd be better off going GTX570 over the GTX480, as you already know you would have a card with lower power consumption (less heat output) quieter and better cooler which would keep your ears more comfortable and the temp lower.

Yes the GTX480 does have more RAM and higher memory bandwidth than GTX570, but at 1920 res it doesn't really have much significant impact on having better frame rate...as it's only about 1-2 fps higher than the GTX570 in one or two odd games.
 
480 has more ROPs, this can be beneficial when using 8x or more AA, 32xAA will be faster on a 480, a stock for 480 is clocked at 700Mhz whilst the 570 is at 732Mhz so clock the 480 to 570 speeds and you will see more of a difference with high AA applied. Specification wise the 480 is the better card, if you go for it you will need good case cooling otherwise a 570 would be better.
 
Thankyou all for your advice and help. Seeing that I am only running a 26' 1920*1200 the noise factor is gonna sway my choice to the 570 over the memory advantage of the 480.

Looking at the 570, the evga and msi has about £50 difference. Do you think this accounts for the cooler quality on these boards or purely the warranty difference?

Mines not hot or loud so I guess you have no clue, decent case with good cooling and the 480 is quiet and gets as hot as any other enthusiast card.
 
Had the Gainward 480 and this had max temps of 75c after a few runs of Fur Mark with the fan no louder than any other card I have owned.

I wouldn't say it's defectively hot.

However I've had both cards and it is hotter than the 570. Whilst playing BC2 the 480 hit a max of 80-81c with 80% fan (1:1 fan to celsius profile), 24-27c room temp.

My 570 is seeing a max temp of 75c with a max of 68% fan in BC2 (room temps 24-26c, adjusted fan profile.)

Both of the cards were overclocked.

The 570 is quieter and outputs less heat, however both are very good cards. I changed as the heat and noise was a bit much for me personally (only worked out an extra £30 after sale- less than a zalman gpu cooler)

Yes i agree, half the haters of the 480 havent even owned one,they are no different to any other high end card providing you have a decent case with good airflow.
