Random question... My Ryzen 2700X, and subsequently my 3700X; I had power settings in Windows (10) set to downclock them when idle (balanced, or power saver pre-sets). Both CPU's would drop to 2.2ghz when idle, which was nice as fans would be quiet and temps were around 28 degrees. This was on B450 MSI Gaming Pro Carbon board.

Now I have a 5700X with Windows 11, and with same settings on an MSI B550 Gaming Carbon, the CPU won't drop below 2.9ghz or thereabouts, when idle. Checked mimimum CPU speed is not set too high (5% or below) in settings, and all appears to be the same as it was with the previous CPUs & board.

No big deal really, but I liked the drop to 2.2ghz when idle!

Anyone got any ideas on this at all? I did some investigation in the BIOS and so on, because its as if there is a minimum multiplier set somewhere, but I failed to find it if there is.

Do you have the latest chipset drivers installed downloaded from AMD? Should be version 4.08.09.2337 for a B550 motherboard. You'd hope 'Balanced' would then downclock.

If you're checking clock speeds in task manager it's not an accurate representation of what is going on. Only Ryzen Master will show you correct values for cores. 2.2Ghz when idle would not be correct either. It would be in a "sleep" state.

As long as your idle temps read ~30c idle in ryzen master there is nothing to worry about.

Yeah task manager is completely useless with ryzen 5xxx series (and earlier versions too) when it comes to real time clock speeds, it's incredibly annoying and 'should' have been fixed ages ago seeing as it's been an issue for around 5 YEARS but hey this is what you get from MS these days.

Do yourself a favour and also put a voltage offset of -0.2 with PBO set to auto with 150watts/amps/etc all set.

It'll drop your temps quite nicely and won't affect performance. I tried -0.3 and the system won't BOOT into windows. With the negative offset and PBO enabled, I get good temps and the CPU clock boosts to 47.5 instead of maxxing out at 46.

You could do a BIOS update and reset everything to factory defaults.
