Hey folks,

Just swapped over from a 570gtx to a r290 and having no luck getting it working. Starting any games is a no no, with bf 4 instantly crashing and resetting pretty much as soon as it starts with no game display, just a couple of flashes of the blinking cursor in the corner, and assassins creed 4 almost starting, getting as far as the nvidia sign and then crashing

So, going back a bit, to lighter use, it even crashes randomly whilst on desktop. If stopped working a few times whilst on this forum so writing on the trusty iPad.

I've used driver sweeper and according to that there is no remains of nvidia left, and I've tried a few different versions of the ati drivers, including the betas released on the 3/12. All of which do the same thing.

Been a while since I've swapped cards over, so am I doing something daft?

Thanks a lot in advance : )

Did same as you gtx570 to a 290 and no problems at all, check your psu is beefy enough( yeah psu should be fine)?
There have been some duff cards so you may need to return it.

And my 2500k is running at stock and has been fine for a while now, busily rendering cad and stuff so again, I think that's fine

Try it in a different PC if possible. Failing that a fresh install of Windows on a spare HDD would rule out driver issues. The 290 draws a little more power than the 570 under load, but given that it crashes even on desktop I'd suspect something else unless.

Does it got to a "black screen" with the audio still playing in the background for a little, or is it a straight crash to desktop.

I would suggest as your PSU is well above the min required by AMD to run the R9 290, I would also check to see if you have Hynix RAM or Elpdia RAM (Majority of cards with Elpdia RAM had issues, however it also happened to one or two Hynix RAM cards also iirc).

You could just have a duff card, and l would say if you have exhausted all possibilities to RMA the card for a replacement.

It's a black screen, which then goes to a full screen of red with chewed up sound. It then restarts. Not sure on the memory. Easy way of finding out?

Just removing the drivers again as it doesn't seem to crash whilst browsing until the ati catalyst is installed so I can look into the motherboard bios. Getting consistent crashes at the min

Seen the blackscreen/redscreen thing a bit with the 290s - no one I know has bothered to try and diagnose it or anything just RMA'd the cards in some cases the replacement has been fine but a few have gone to other cards instead so no idea if its a problem with hardware configurations or some bad cards.

Right, I've updated the mobo bios to a couple of different ones, including the latest one available that works for the revision I have, and it's still crashing all over the place

Gosh darn it

Sorry to say, but Like, Roff said, you will need to return it :( So many like this and all over the internet, the same story. :(

Since updating the bios, it seems to now crash half way through the driver installation. The point where the screen resolution changes. Happens every time. Love pcs sometimes ; )

Those driver sweeper programs can do more harm than good sometimes, had to reinstall Windows before from using them when I got my 7950. I think they remove things they shouldn't be removing! I would personally try a reinstall if possible before sending anything back, but depends how easy it is for you to wipe your current windows install or get another hard drive to try a new install on.

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain to do tbh. It's set up for rendering and will take a lot of effort to get back to how it is now if I wipe everything.

I picked it up from overclockers today though so hopefully if I pop over tomorrow morning they might just swap it if the same problem pops up on their test rig. No doubt it won't though

Just managed to watch a movie as gave up hope, and got through it without a crash. Then opened a web page and it crashed instantly. This certainly ain't stable : )
