Hullo!

From what I understand the 5770 is a PCIe 2.0 card. My motherboard supports PCIe 1.0 but aren't 2.0 cards supposed to be backwards compatible with PCIe 1.0 slots?

Really puzzled...

I tried installing the 5770, slotted it in, plugged in the power, machine doesn't boot...

Power gets to the mobo, fans spin up (system fan goes super duper high speed), graphics card is getting power - fan spins up.

But it just doesn't boot - I certainly don't get any graphical output!

What could be wrong...? Or do I finally need to upgrade my ageing system?

Hi there, may I ask what your full system spec is?

Also, just to confirm - you have plugged the cable from the monitor directly to the graphics card (not to the motherboard)? May seem like a silly question, but we have seen it before.

Erm I run a 5770 and have no problem.

And yes a 2.0 card can work on a 1.0 version slot easily. I ran a 5770 on an old Am2+ mobo with PCI-E1.0 for a bit and no problem.

Seems to be a bad card.

Either that or the PSU is a bit dodgy!

Are you using a 6 pin straight from the motherboard or via a molex adapter!

Full Spec (and I did think whether I plugged my cable in properly - and yup, one of the two DVI outputs):

Motherboard in title
AMD X2 5600+ (AM2)
3GB DDR2 (a 2GB stick and 1GB) - I tried both sticks on their own, no difference
700W OCZ PSU
Currently on my Radeon HD 3850

Using 6 pin straight from the PSU - Graphics card fan lights up, and spins up without a prob :(

Strange thing is as soon as I plug in the 5770, my outtake fan goes full speed - its like extra volts are going through it WTF!

Oh yes... and my hard-drives just don't do their normal loading thing... they kind of flicker (the ding ding ding sounds like a little rattle type of sound), then no hard drive activity...

I can tell you now that a lot of older boards will not boot with a 5 series Radeon in. I know because I had such a board (an Asrock).

Check for the latest bios for your board.

Motherboard: MSI 0A7C
It's the original motherboard in an HP dx2250 system...

It seems the case ALXAndy - I'll hunt around for any bios updates... but I am certainly afraid that the board is too old, and I'm already on the latest :(

Hmm. Yeah I googled it. God damn HP, I doubt they even bother making bioses :(

Funny that though, seems MSI have their fingers in lots of pies (my Alienware has an MSI board in !)

Seems to be an update for the BIOS, but it appears to not be the right one at the same time...

Mine is a Phoenix bios, and the update seems to want an Award bios to update... ho hum.

Upgrade ahoyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Phoenix PWN Award mate.

Phoenix acquired Virtual Chips, Inc., a maker of synthesizable cores for PC peripherals, and Mountain View, California-based Award Software in 1998

Don't worry, I'm completely thick.

Its just when I ran the bios updater, it said 'Award BIOS not found'.

But then I ran the Award flasher, and it updated.

Didn't help though, 5770 still doesn't want to play :D
