hey im at these two cards and i dont upgrade regularly so will be looking for the card that will be able to last the longest and be able to play games for at least a good time to come, which im thinking is the 5850 but because of my current pc specs im not so sure that it ll run :

680I sli mobo
2.4 Q6600 cpu
1tb hd
500W thermaltake psu
8800gt (to be replaced)

i realise that some overclocking is required to reduce any bottlenecking but im struggling to get it past 2.7ghz without it being really unstable !

so which seems more sensible to upgrade to for a long term solution!?

The 5850 is still the way to go, even at 2.7, but if you can push it further then you'll get better results. Definately consult the overclocking forum for tips (there's loads of advice on clocking q6600s) and maybe if you still can't get it above 3GHz you could consider the 5770.

hmm bottlenecking with a q6600, depends on what games you play i suppose, i have a q6600 in my spare pc with a 4870, and it gets the same fps as my newer 17 with the same 4870 in it in games like left 4 dead 2 and modern warfare 2, the i7 is clocked at 4.0 by the way so unless a 5850 is massively faster than a 4870 then i wouldnt have thought there would be bottlenecking.

At what resolution? If lower than 1680x1050 the 5770...if higher then the 5850. If equal to 1680x1050 it's up to you :p

im running at 1650 x 1050 so in-between ! at 2.7ghz, how much will a 5850 be limited? will it be a considerable amount ? if its not limited by too much i think itll be the best option as i want to be able to play games at at least high settings for a while to come as i dont want to find myself needing to upgrade again anytime soon!

How much money do you have to spend? I would ditch the 680i board, buy a p45 board or even p35 and clock the q6600 to 3.4+GHz with a 5850
