580 backplate

Just received this email from EK tech dept.....

Hi Mark,
In order to use the EK-FC580 backplate you will need to tap six mounting holes in your stock cooler to M3 thread and then use the appropriate countersunk screws (I believe the M3x8 DIN7991 or M3x8 DIN965) should fit perfectly. Of course this will void the warranty on your graphics card.

Alternatively you could use M2.5x8 countersunk if you find them at your local hardware store. This way you will not void the warranty.

Well i decided to go for the EK backplate as it seemed a bit of a challenge......people on other forums saying it only fits with waterblock and also EK confirming this.

So i ordered one.........

Time to put the plate on now methinks......

The horrible blue pcb board plus dust sucker.

The first problem i had was i needed longer screws according to EK, but luckily my pal worked at a printers and they had some of the same gauge i needed, but when i got them they werent that much longer than the originals and the were just flat blade heads which to me looked a bit naff....(i'm a fussy ******) but i tried them anyway, but as it turned out they were too short....

So a couple of days later i googled my local fixes and fastenings stores and proceded to drive around the north east trying to get some M 2.5x8 screws......after covering about 30 mile in total i gave up as they all said the same that they were far too small.

So for my next step i tried phoning model shops, and on the 6th shop they said they had some but they were 10mm.....so another 14 miles later here we go again but with much nicer looking screws (crossheads) and they fit a treat.

I also put a blue led in and pointed it towards the graphics card but it is like a mirror so i didn't get the desired effect i was after which was to put a blue sheen on the whole backplate.....but it does highlight the GTX 580 engraved bit nicely.

Looks great mate :D

What are the temps like afterwards ? I've read some reports of them increasing after the back plate is fitted ?

Thanks m8, ....temps havent changed at all....i think i read somewhere that it went up 1c....but tbh if i open my living room door the temp in the room can drop 3c which would effect things.

Sometimes when the sister in law comes around i swear the temp goes up in my living room, she wears short skirts and always wears very revealing tight tops over her 44 DDs.
I might do a test to see if it does.
