Hey guys after some input on 580 sli setups:

Im making a new build and have decided to go for a 580 sli setup with a view to water cooling it if ive still got cash left over afterwards.
Im looking at a pair of MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II 1536MB, ive heard that these things run hot in sli, if i run out of cash to
water cool them will it be too much to air cool?

Also not sure if i should just go for a couple of reference cards.
580's in sli seem to be the way to go but if any of you guys have input on other dual gpu setups im all ears! :D

How are you finding those? What sort of temps are you running? Any issues as of yet?
Also very tidy mate ;)
I find them really great,,

Can't remember what the temps are,,But i do know the temps are fine..

If you do buy two of the GTX 580 Twin FrozrII cards you will need very very good case cooling as they will dump all there heat striaght inside your case...;)

Yea im thinking about just going for a pair of stock 580's like these ones:

i can always overclock them in the future if i need to after i have funds to water cool them.

Thanks for the reply

The Twin FrozrII will be quieter
But you will have to make sure you have great case cooling to get rid of up to 600watts of heat that two 580's can dump into the case..

Buying two of them Gainward ref ones will save you £100 to put towards waterblocks for them ;)

yea its a cooler master cosmos 1000 so cooling could be better, will have to take a hacksaw to it and stick some extra fans in there, surely tho if i water cool at a bare minimum both gpu's then things should be fine though?

do you think the Corsair Obsidian 650D case would be good enough cooling for a pair of Twin FrozII? The case has a 200mm intake fan, a 200mm fan on the top of the case and a rear 120mm fan

I'm in the same boat, but I have a cunning but simple plan. The fan on the side of my HAFX, I'll re-mount it to extract. Two benefits. 1. Keeps the cards cool. 2. Keeps my feet warm! :D

+1 for reference cards, i use gigabyte ref 470's. Better to have as much heat expelled out as possible. Good slot spacing on the mobo helps as well.

I also use an antec spotcool behind the cards, keeps them within 1-2c of each other, without it the top card runs 10c higher than the bottom one.

One mistake that lots of people make with the cards that got coolers which dump heat into the case instead of the reference exhaust from back cards is that they put a case fan on the side-panel as intake, or no fan on the side-panel.

For my overclocked MSI 5850 Twin FrozR II max temp dropped from average 68-70C down to 63-65C, after I switch my side-panel case fan from intake to exhaust.

I think the reason for this is bring in more cool air into the case doesn't make the heat disappear, and heat still get trapped inside the case; using the side-panel case fan exhaust however will effectively vent the heat that is generated by the graphic card(s) that got dumped into the case, thus more getting lower temp. Exhaust fans at top/rear top might help lower the temp for the upper area of the case, but they don't help much for lowering the temp in the lower area around the graphic card(s).
