580 or 7970

You obviously have no preference of makers (NV/AMD) but tbh I would at least wait a while for Kepler and see what that brings to the table, unless you can afford to splash your money around then grab the best that's available now.. which would be the 79* series from AMD.

Depends on the rest of your system, what games you play and the resolution of your monitor.
The 7970 is the better performer but quite costly.
Personally, I would wait until the 7950 comes out. Its supposed to be 580 performance and could be a lump cheaper.

I'd stick with what you got and wait for kepler unless you can afford to get 7970 now then change to kepler IF it's any better. I wouldn't hesitate to go for a 7970 now then change to nvidia....but I love my 3D vision so really got no choice but to wait.

I would wait for a month or 2 as prices should settle down on the 7970 by then hopefully. I would not bother waiting for keplar as all information points to it being very late. Top end keplar is not expected until near the end of the year and the gtx560 replacement is expected near the summer. Nvidia had nothing to show at ces which in my opinion is a bad sign. Surely if they had something working to put people off buying amd 7 series cards they would have shown it. They never even had a card made from wood this time round.

Source? Or is this pure speculation on your part? ;)

Depends how long you can wait - if you can wait for keplar (with no actual promise of when its going to be released btw ;) ) - wait. Otherwise its a no brainer 7970 > 580. Look around and you can pickup a 7970 for £430 - same price as most 580 3Gb's.

I buy when i need an upgrade but will hold off if a new release is gauranteed in a month or 2 max. The wait for keplar is not good advice imo as all indicators say its ages away. Its not even sound advice as nobody knows if its gonna be good or not. My favourite graphics cards have all been bought around release time as they tend to last longer and feel like they have given me my monies worth. The 9800pro i had and the 1900xtx are my 2 favourites. Had a 8800gtx but it had already been out a year and a half so never got that feeling of greatness from it.

The good old 8800 series, mine lasted 2 years then caught fire, was one hell of an ending.

My 8800gtx packed in around the same time as the famous nvidia drivers that were overheating the cards. I dont know if it was that driver or not though but i did use it. I swapped my 3870 for the 8800gtx though so it was a pretty decent swap while it lasted.

this guy just trolls here asking the same questions over and over that have been answered for him, DO NOT feed the troll

Get another 6950 DC II, CrossFire will give you higher gains for less money although you would need to have a MB with PCI-e slots 3 slots apart.

If you haven't got the 3 slot space, you could say buy a frozr II/III and put the DC II into the bottom slot.

580, imo, waste of money over what you have now, with a good overclock enabled eg ~970MHz on the core it will roughly be the same speed as a stock 580.

If you have to, with the chunky cooler on the DCII, put more voltage through it and go for 1GHz, it will most likely surpass a stock 580.

Just noticed you asked another Q. here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18363198

You walked away from it without as much a reply, so lomez, you look to be on the ball mate.

Another waste of time and opinion @OCUk forums!:(

Depens on price.

580 @ £350 vs 7970 @ £420 - I'd get the 7970.
580 @ £350 vs 7970 @ £450 - Edge towards 580.
580 @ £350 vs 7970 @ £500 - Go for the 580.

Personally, if you don't really need the card now wait for a month or two until prices drop. The 7970 will definately drop below £400 when Kepler (eventually) arrives, and it may even get close to £300 if Kepler trashes it. There are also rumours that AMD has a higher shader part in the pipeline, which if true will decimate 7970 values.
