5800 vs 4870x2

5850<4870X2<5870
some argue the 5850 is better due to it being newer and DX11 but that is generally it

4870X2 might perform a little better in the Dx9 titles but for Dx11 the 5870 is obviously the right choice.

Ive gone from a 4870x2 to a 5870.The frame rates in games are very close.Id say the x2 edges it with dx9 games and the 5870 edges it in dx10.The 5870 though is also dx11 and runs cool and quiet. The x2 is a leaf blower that sounds like a jet on take off and runs hot.The x2 also needs the game to work with crossfire and not all games do or do it well.Ive had many sli and crossfire rigs and if you can get a single card to give similar performance then that is always the preferable option. The 5870 is the best card ive ever owned. The plan was to put my x2 into another build but after the 5870 i dont think i could live with the noise so it sits in its box unloved and ill most likely buy another 5870 for the new build instead.

Hehe, yeah they are leaf blowers, once the fan is pushed past about 40 - 45% you get a turbo hairdryer.:)

I'd be interested to find out if the 5xxx series give smoother and more consistent frame rates than the 4xxx series, or perhaps its because with two gpu's I am effectively running crossfire. I don't get microstuttering just sometimes the frame rates are slightly choppy.

Games do run smoother with the 5870.
Ive often read about microstutter but never thought my sli or crossfire cards had this but when i switched to the single card the gfx just flow by smooth as silk.It was actually the very first thing i noticed.

Ok, cheers m8.

Might have to grab me a new toy or toys then:D Can't tell you how many times today alone that I've hovered over the buy button. I've been considering a small outlay (I know this may sound mad) on something like an nvidia 260gtx 216, you know, something not too expensive just to see how good the 200 series really are. Great for o/c apparently.

Ive also got a gtx 260 and i think that's a good card for the money.Mine is the older version with less pipe lines and it did overclock ok but my frame rates and benchmarks didn't go up when i did for some reason.I went from the gtx 260 to the 4870x2 and the x2 buries the gtx 260 performance wise.

Yeah, something like nearly twice the performance. If the 5000 series are consistently smooth then I'll grab an X2, if not I'll still have good performance if instead I pick up a couple of 5850's and xfire them. Thanks for your advice.:)

With a q6600 at 3.3 gig a single 5870 would be a good match imo.I have a qx6800 that's 2.93 stock and sometimes run it 3.6 to 3.8 for benchmarking so we are in the same ballpark cpu wise. For xfire 5870s a i7 at 3.6 or higher would be needed imo so as not to bottleneck the cards performance..
