Alright guys I know this cpu is quite dated now but I run a 5800X with a 4080FE card for 4k gaming on a lg c2 screen and I’ve been offered a 5800X3D from a friend for £250 would I notice the upgrade ? I also use the pc for work stuff like word/excel emailing etc so don’t want any slow down with programs ?

I was in the same boat, I think it depends when you want to do your next platform upgrade. The 5800x goes for about £100ish second hand, so is it worth the £150 upgrade and the faff of selling on your current CPU? I personally decided no and would wait until I was ready for a platform upgrade (which is now as I'm awaiting my 9800x3d from OCUK). If you are planning to do a platform upgrade soon, you are better off saving that money for that as I don't think the gains are worth it short term. If you are sticking with AM4 for a while, it's a "nice to have" upgrade that doesn't cost a fortune.

Not at £250. You can get a 5700x3d cheaper than that brand new.

I can’t say I’m really unhappy with it, I just know that the 3d cache improves gaming from what I’ve read and managed to digest plus just the fact I’ve been offered it. The 5700x3d seems to be very close to the 5800x3d and as already said a lot cheaper but in my head going from a 5800 to 5700 just seems a downgrade although it probably isn’t. Just for reference in 4K with black myth using dlss I’m getting mid 80’s fps mostly so would the x3d’s vastly improve that ?

I'd personally not pay £250 for a 5800X3D even though that's not a relatively bad price.
My vote is for 5700X3D as the cost/performance ratio vs a £250 5800X3D would be better. That or a platform upgrade which I'd probably lean towards if you have the budget.

I feel like £250 for it is a bit steep also. I looked on ebay recently I felt like £200 was more the top end price they're going for atm and tbh I would expect that to drop more now with recent developments.

When my 5800x failed i bought a 5800x3d to replace it. The difference in minimum frame rates was noticeable and things were smotther overall. But in current times I wouldnt spend that amount of money to upgrade, i would save up for AM5 to make noticable improvements.

My use was rather specific - playing MSFS in VR.

For this particular case, I moved from a 5800 to a 5800x3D - and it was well worth it!

With the vanilla 5800 MSFS suffered greatly with microstutters (running a 3090) - with the x3D chip, the microstutters all but disappeared.

I later moved to a 4090, and that, combined with the 5800x3D has served me well until now. It’s only the release of the 9800x3D that has finally forced me to upgrade.
