Hi All. Finally buying my new 5800x3D, before the pound drops even further. Before I do.... do I need to pay extra attention to the thermal paste?

It's supopsed to run hot, and it's not going to be running on great air-cooling in the short term, so I don't really want to screw this up. But... I'm looking at the pastes online and there's HUNDREDS of them. Or at least dozens. Any suggestions or recomendations? I remember a time when this was a contentious topic, but I really can't tell what (if any) I should get. Heck, does the 5800x3d come with the stuff pre-attached, and I shoud clean the heatsink really carefully?

Thanks :)

It doesn't come with a cooler, so there's no paste either as that's usually pre-applied. Some 3rd party coolers will come with their own paste and should be good enough for the 5800X3D. If the paste is not pre-applied on those, I suggest doing an X shape on the CPU, that will get you better coverage due to the chiplet design.

Enough in there to last a good few mountings. The cpu will not come with thermal paste applied but the cooler you get may have it pre applied.

I have a bottle of thermal cleaning stuff that I have been using for a decade but they do not sell it anymore. All they have on OCUK is this.

The cleaner is a really small bottle and not sure the surface purifier is worth the effort. Some alcohol cleaner and kitchen towels will work just as well as that stuff.

As I only game. I run a thermal pad, no messy paste to clean up.

If you are actually using it for any CPU intensive tasks then stick with paste. The Noctua paste is a popular one.

I've used Noctua NT-H2 Thermal Paste on 2 different CPU's and happy with it. I bought the 10g version, but family can use it. I'd recommend the 3g below if go Noctua route for a couple of applications. It is certainly worth considering.
