I've been having problems with a new build lately and been wondering if anyone here could help me out, My computer has been going to a black screen whilst on desktop forcing me to restart, weird thing is it doesn't happen whilst in game, even running crysis maxed out (1080p, very high, DX10) the cpu has never gone over 45 degrees, and the graphics never over 65. So I can't see it being a heat issue and I can't see it being a power one either as it only does it at desktop not under heavy load. Is there anything I'm missing? Any help would be great, thanks.

Specs:

Intel i7 950 @ stock w/ Megahalems
Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3
OcUK(PNY) GeForce GTX 580 ( Got it when they were £399 at xmas :) )
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA 6Gb/s
Antec TruePower New Modular 750W
Windows 7 64bit

Welcome to the forums!

Likely/hopefully a driver issue so cure may well simply be to try with a n other gpu driver.

Symptoms? Just a black screen? When black any hd (or other)activity? or is it frozen ?

Do you have a n other graphics card you can try? Any way you can try the card in a n other computer?

Have tried 2 or 3 drivers so far but I keep getting the same problem, sorry I should have mentioned it in the OP, I could try some more later when I get home, I'm in uni at the minute. Maybe someone could recommend a few to try.

Hmmm yeah the screen goes black, computer seems to be fine other than that, however it takes a restart before I can use it again, the problem is more more annoying than serious but I planned on using this computer for uni work so I want to get it running stable.

Sorry but as I'm not running that card I have no idea which are good/bad drivers for it - hopefully someone who has can advise.

Good luck!

Hmmm I think so, is the 22" Samsung LED, not sure that could be the problem though, it does it when I'm on the internet, might try disabling it though to be sure, but I'm starting to think it could be a driver issue been reading up on the EVGA forums about a similar issue where nvidia HD audio drivers are conflicting with onboard sound, might try my old X-fi soundcard later, you think my PSU will be fine with this too though?

what sound card are you using ?
if your using onboard sound, update the driver to the very latest
i used to have a very similar instance on my old gtx295, i read somewere on the tinterweb that onboard sound drivers may need to be updated, so i did, and the issue went away
worth a shot before a fresh install

Does the monitor have a power saving mode?

Likewise, in Control Panel/Power Options/'Choose when to turn off the display' link (left-hand side). Select 'Never'.
Might want to do the same for 'Sleep' as well.

When it goes to black screen, does ctrl-alt-del bring it back?

im guessing he will of gone down the sleep route ?
but you never know lol, lets hope its that simple

Cheers for the helps guys, I'm using the onboard HD audio of the Asus mobo at the minute, so will try updating that first although I might as well install my old X-fi soundcard assuming the PSU can take it. Tried Ctrl-Alt-Del Point54, but that doesn't do anything, takes a reboot to get it working again. Will try all the suggestions though when I get back home tonight, in the labs at uni currently so can't try anything at the minute.

Yeah that's what I'm starting to believe Bullet, was looking at some of those threads yesterday when trying to figure out what was wrong, I take it you have tried what was mentioned in those threads and can I ask if any of the tips work as we're both using the same motherboard? I've heard on other forums that it might be a conflict with onboard sound so as I mentioned earlier I'm gonna try the X-fi soundcard tonight so will let you know how it goes.

Can't believe Nvidia have let this problem persist into the 5 series.

Was a constant problem with my 470 (which I've now sold), tried all the workarounds, new drivers, etc. Finally got it stable upping the PCI-e frequency from 100 to 103 MhZ. Might be worth a trying first before you do something more drastic like completely re-installing the OS.

Yeah me either, is a bit annoying, went with nvidia because I usually prefer their drivers and whatever, hopefully they sort it out in the future. Might try upping the frequency like you said Marktime see if that works, I'm sure I saw it earlier when looking through the bios, although is there a downside to this? Still makes a change from my previous computer, was an alienware m15x, that had a silly amount of problems with it haha.

Yes, I've tried all the tips but it hasn't helped. I am fortunate in that this only happens to me on average once every 6 or 7 days. It seems to occur staight after the clock speed and voltage drop down to 2d speeds. But nobody as yet has been able to nail exactly what is occuring, except that it may be an incompatiblity with some motherboards.

Yeah, same really, doesn't happen too often, just a bit too unpredictable to do any serious work on at the minute. May I ask if you're still using onboard sound Bullet, might try disabling onboard sound and installing my soundcard later to see if it's a driver conflict. Although if it is to do with the clocks I suppose it might be worth waiting for Nvidia to release a newer driver or maybe a modded one might appear.
