I know this question is like how long is a piece of string but if I was to buy a 5820K now would I get 4 to 5 years out of it as being realistic that's most probably going to be the next time I can afford to upgrade if things stay the same
 
Easily.

If I were upgrading right now, I'd skip Skylake and go X99 & 5820K, performance increases per new generation of chip is only 5-10%, and given that there will only be 2 generation jumps in the next 5yrs, Cannonlake in 2017 being one of them, a 5820K will still be more than viable for the next 4-5yrs.
