5820k overclocking

So after months and months of preaching to everyone that 5820K with its 28 PCI-E lanes was a rubbish rippoff and pretty much singlehandedly ruining all of the X99 threads you have now upgraded to one? there's only one thing you can do to save face now, claim that it was a present and continue to talk badly of it... 3.. 2.. 1..

Very good point.

However did you guess?

But you're right, it was a present.

Awesome isn't it?

I've got the best lady wife ever.

BTW I didn't choose it for the CPU. You don't get a choice with the new Area 51 they're all X99.

The Area 51 looks like the Tet orbiter from Oblivion :D
Also, does the Area 51 have good enough cooling to support overclocking? Most PC manufacturer pre-built systems no matter how good they are come with lackluster cooling

It's very clever really. Uses three Nidec 120mm fans. One positioned at the GPUs, one at the ram and fets for the board then one on the AIO.

I'm not expecting clocking miracles really. My wife bought it for me after the nightmares I just had with MSI.

I'll be happy with 4ghz and the next day onsite warranty. Going to put my Titan Blacks in so it should be quite pokey :)

Sounds like a plan, I trust there will be some aesthetics personalization to the rig? ;)

Also, the cooling sounds quite ample compared to the usual stock cooler with a poxy 120mm molex fan on the side :D However I still choked on my tea when I saw three R9 290X with stock coolers in cross fire on one of the 51 models

Yeah I already ordered ram sinks and so on. A full braid will be on the cards at some point, but this is one Alienware finally got right inside (apart from the naked wires).

So you can see there's one at the top in the front bringing air in for the AIO, one above and tilted at the GPUs to cool the backs of the cards and one loaded in the front to feed the GPUs. It's very effective and very efficient, due to the shape of the back. Basically instead of air coming out straight and hitting the wall behind (potentially going back in depending how far you have it from a wall) it bounces off at an angle and rises upward.

I've no doubts I will never, ever get the 5820k to kick as much ass as my 3970x does because I can bench that at 4.9ghz. I would need to push the 5820k to 4.6 which is practically a miracle and couldn't ever do that on a H55, which is basically what the rig has.

So it's an ever so slight downgrade. The RAIDR worries me too, because that eats four lanes. So I'm going to have to run X8 X8.

But the whole reasoning behind buying it was the warranty, not the brute force. Well, and the looks really...

I just got done completely refurbing my Area 51 ALX (2009) for my wife, hence why she bought me the new one.. I kinda fell in love with it again as I was working on it and yeah, fancied going back to the dark side :D

Here is hers. It has an 8 core Ivy @ 2ghz and a Titan Black. CPU and GPU are H55 cooled plus the entire rig is braided in black and red and I've put channels in to hide ugly wiring. Oh, and a floor panel too.

^ custom front intake :) Just waiting on the side panel to come from the USA now :)

What is the orange spaceship pod thing? :D

My subwoofer :D

I went Scandyna for the cinema, pretty crazy stuff lol.

I must say it is certainly is a nice bit of kit :)

Yeah it's a good Area 51. The last one was great outisde, minging inside, too expensive (£1700 start price) and impossible to move without breaking given they weigh about half a ton.

They stopped doing Area 51s for about two years.
