5820k overclocking

So I finally get my 5820k and Gigabyte X99-SLI motherboard tomorrow :D :D
Can anyone give me any tips on the differences between my 8320 and 5820k? Things you think ill need to know about differences etc, such as max temps and what the maximum voltages are and the average overclock that people get...
If you have anything else I may need to know or anything I can watch/read.

Also, not overclocking, but will I need to reinstall windows?

Do a fresh re-install. You're going from an AMD chipset to Intel, so the drivers will probably winge. Although it's a pain, reinstalling now wil save you headaches later.

Temps are the same as for regular Haswell, so try to keep full load to mid 70s max, maybe upper 70s (I am overcautious though). My 5820K @ 4.1GHz doesn't go above 60C on a 240mm AIO.

You've got an X99 board with the OC socket, so make sure you turn it on using the CPU mode switch on the board!

Max Vcore for daily running should be no more than 1.3V ideally, but with that you should get well above 4GHz providing you don't have a dog of a chip!

I know you've said you aren't OCing, but have a look at the settings in the thread I've linked below. Although it's based on the 8Pack bundle, most 5820Ks should get to at least level 1. Mine is fine @ 4.1GHz but needs tweaking for stability at 4.25GHz

Oops sorry, think you read that wrong, or I wrote it that way, was meant to say, not overclocking related :p
 
Also yeah, got 2x8gb of Avexir Red series 2400mhz, the stuff looks awesome! Plus, I got it at a good price, and OCUK will probably always have it in stock shall I want more!
First thing I will do after building is testing to see stock temps and then Overclocking the poo out of it (not literally, dont want a poor dead 5820k!!) :D

Also, I have one of the AsTek 240mm, and plenty of the OCUK/Silverstone 120mm fans as why not!
 
The AseTek 240mm is what I've got. Just be aware that the OCUK/Silverstone 120mm can be loud!

I have a fan controller on the Phanteks Enthoo Luxe that im getting ;)
 
I did an hour of the RealBench stress test for temp testing. Then I've just used it for gaming and rendering as I intend to use the system. If it crashes you know it isn't stable.

@Faceman what settings other than 1.25 Vcore have you got for 4.5GHz, e.g. system agent? Currently rock-solid @ 4.1 but would like to push higher.

I have 32gb ( 8x4 ) of avexir red with my x99 build and it does look great.
 
I've had two 5820k's.

Both of them clocked to 4.5ghz at 1.25v no sweat.

I'm using MSI boards, but all I did was enable the XMP profile (3000mhz ram) which gives a base clock of 125mhz, then adjusted the multiplier to 36.
Lastly changed vcore to 1.25 and reboot :)

I have no doubt they could go higher, but I don't see the need.

As for stress testing, I ran Aida for about 10 minutes, but generally I just prefer to use the machine and see what happens.
 
I have overclocked a fair few 5820k chips and they have all hit at least 4.4ghz. My 5960x is on 4.6ghz and I ran aida64 for 24hours, 10 minutes isn't long enough to test an overclock hehe.

I agree, but my point was I would rather test the overclock by actually using the machine the way I normally do instead of a synthetic test.
 
Running at 4.5ghz on 1.2V and getting max core temps of 68c on one core when under realbench!!

Good result. If I was in the market for a new CPU I think it would be a 5820K. I'll revisit CPU's in 12 months and see what's on offer then. Whichever flavour it is it will definitely be a 6/8 core chip.

The speed is amazing! Massively noticeable difference!
