Right!
I just turned on my new system with my 5820k.
Nothing has exploded yet!
Can't do much as I haven't got an OS yet. But I've gone into bios and it's reporting the cpu temp as being 41.5 degrees.
Is that rather high for idling in bios?
I have a noctua d15 cooler attached.
Thoughts welcome!
Thanks.

its fine, cpu wont enter speedstep/power saving while in the bios,so it runs at full speed/voltage

in windows it will clock down in speed/voltage at idle=cooler

Mine's usually about 30-35 in BIOS, but I'm running h100 so it's bound to be a little cooler. 40 doesn't sound too terrible, but check your temps when you have windows installed (CoreTemp 64 or similar) and make sure all the cores are similar temperatures. Large discrepancy could indicate poor heatsink contact, I had two cores running hotter and had to reapply thermal paste - all idle around 25C now ^_^

Hmm.
My D15 is a good cooler, and I think temps should be a little lower even in bios state.
I don't think it's installation went that smoothly. I didn't tighten it's two screws in equal small increments, and I think the moments of asymmetry may have spread the thermal paste unevenly.
But I'll follow your suggestion Howling and test temperatures in Windows, then I'll decide if the cooler needs to be re- sat/pasted.
I just feel that, even while in bios, I shouldn't be getting more than mid/late 30s.
What do you think?

Mine was very similar on my 4690k. Maybe even 45c but when I built mine about 6 weeks ago the weather was really hot. There was a noticeable difference when I checked them whilst in idle in Windows.

Currently the cores are reading between 24-27c and I am using a Raijintek Themis Direct Contact cooler. It is a bit fresh this morning though :)

Nothing wrong here . normal temps in bios . Get into Windows so speedstep and Windows power management kicks in .
