5820k where's it stand today?

sold my old pc with a i75820 clocked at 5ghz all cores went 2 a 9900k have it clocked at 5.3ghz all cores. some games will take some good from 9900k but not a lot as the i7 5820k is still a very good chip

How much voltage were you pumping through it for 5ghz? Must have been a golden sample as 4.7ghz required silly voltage on most chips.

Moved to a 3900x about 3months ago - was running a 5820k which I had owned since new. Began it running stock but had it running at 4.2 without any issues for a year or two before as a final 'go' I clocked it to 4.6 which it ran very comfortably and cooly till I sold it.

It was installed in a custom loop and heat was never a problem.

Would not hesitate to recomend (assuming that you can get one that clocks reasonably!).

I changed and moved to AMD for a number of reasons:-
1. Fed up of Intel prices.
2. AMD had , suddenly , become competetive and prices were much more to my liking.
3. Boredom - fancied a change
4. Could see the need for more cores in the future.

Summary - it is easy to convince oneself of anything if you really want to do something !!

Is my new system quicker - yes (but not by that much!! )- factoring in the cost of new chip, motherboard (x570),ram (3600 from 2666), case FD R6 , 1 x 512gb nvme , 1 x 1gd nvme etc it was an expensive operation !! (but it looks great:))

Would I recomend the change 'up' to anyone else - tbh NO (it was I think an excellent system and would have lasted for a few years yet).

I got rid of my 5820K to downgrade to a 1600 just for a change but it has worked out well as i've now had a a 2600, 2700x and 3600 in the same board :)

They couldn't (well only on LN2). Poster is either confused or lying :p

I could get 4.8 ghz from my old 5960x in conjunction with a resonable cache oc and 3200mhz ram , anything higher and it would instantly crash , and 24/7 it ran at 4.7ghz , i mean it is possible but it would mean disabling cores until you found the one or 2 that could hit 5ghz

As for a 5820k you *might* be lucky and find one of the cores that could do 5ghz , but whats the point in a single core 5ghz ? , maybe a few runs of super pi but thats about it.

ive got one now that would probably do 4.7 - 4.8 ghz 24/7 still really great cpu wouldnt swap to anything yet amd or intel. especially with the new amd cpus coming within a few months. that are upto 20 percent quicker than the current ones. yes you can always get quicker stuff coming but when its a big jump like whats here in a couple of months its not a great feeling when you lump out loads of money only for the new in thing to drop thats quicker which you could have had. if only you waited a few months more. we not talking years.

5820k doesnt stuggle in anything stock nevermind overclocked. still beats most amd cpus in games overclocked and its done really well. roll on the new amd cpus. hopefully they are as good.

well you could be right when I soled it had clock at 4.5 ghz lol a lot of 2580k can hit 4.8 ghz with no prob

think you got em mixxed up with 2500ks lol. many wouldnt do 4.4 nevermind 4.8 :D thats why these lot are saying if you had a 5ghz one you probably one of the only people on the planet who had one.:p

I'm not a regular here like I used to be but where does the 5820k stand at 4.4Ghz compared to current gen stuff.

Would I noticed any gains upgrading to current gen or am I still limited by my GPU at this point. Must say it's been a rock solid system. Gaming at 1440p on the monitor but sometimes do 4k gaming on the TV if it's a game I can use a controller for.

A Ryzen 1600 is about the closest performing chip to a 5820K.

Yea 5820K (4.4-4.8 GHz OC) will be good untill alder lake/zen 4 hits the market. Depending on core/price available and also IPC improvements, it might be a good time to upgrade for us gamers.

I would say more like 2600 if not better in games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkypSAxMjBY This video is quite interesting even though it is dated quite a bit.

for 1440p/4K i wouldnt really upgrade an overclocked 5820K atm unless you have a lot of money to blow, in which case you probably running 1440p IPS 144hz, 2080ti.

From what everyone has said i think i will just stick with what i have for another year or so, it's still performing very well and i can always part salvage from this in the future, i know 2nd hand prices are good right now but i don't really want it to feel like a side grade. I'm still happy with my 1080Ti Aurous Extreme too, only real time i see any struggles if i hook it up to the 4K TV in which case things can get a little ropey but that's more the performance of the 1080Ti and choice of game.
