5850 Downclocking Causing Flickering

Hi guys,

At the start of the year I had to RMA my Sapphire 5850 (rev 1) and got an ASUS 5850 (rev 1) in return. When I got the Asus card up and running I noticed in games there would be severe flickering at menus when the card was overclocked and sometimes even in the games themselves. I made a thread but go nowhere with it as I had no information to go by.

However I have now found that the flickering is caused by the 5850 downclocking itself (like it does when the PC is idle to save power) and then going back to the overclock very quickly. The rapid change in underclocking/overclocking (I think) is causing the flickering. On my old sapphire card whenever I overclocked using MSI afterburner it would just stay at my overclocked frequencies and not downclock. Is there any way I could make my Asus card do this too?

My ideal end result would be to have the card downclock when it is not overclocked and has little load (as it should) but then not downclock when I overclock and preferably be able to do this without flashing it but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Also, has anyone else had this problem? For the record I run dual monitors.

You are on the right track, It's the memory clock change that causes the flickering.

They fixed :D it by having a bios that did not allow the memory to change (downclock) when powerplay changed clocks and voltages.

Easy fix, edit your own bios or find a newer one for the card.

Obviously Your not going to be able to work around it if You have overclocked the memory, without running those same speeds in all power phases.

Something like Afterburner would be a way out, set your clocks a fan etc and just start it up when you want to game.
