5850 fan noise

I've made my system really quiet except now, previously inaudible noises are more noticeable. At around 26% fan speed the stock blower fan emits a slightly unpleasant noise, like a PCI back plate vibrating against the chassis.

Without spending a lot of money can I do anything about this?

I suppose the blower fan could be introducing a vibration as it spins at high speed. If it is the PCI bracket then maybe some sort of interference medium between the bracket and the case would help. I'd start with paper and work up to slightly thicker stuff.

Replacement of coolers on graphics cards tends to cost £30-£60 for true quiet running. If you intend keeping the card for a good while it might be worth it. If you are lucky the cooler may even fit your next graphics card too.

Reviews seem to indicate its a bit of a faff.
Had one on my GTX480 and it did the job. If you've got the time to fit it, I think it should solve the noise problem.

The fans on the cooler itself are silent below 40-50%, and they'll never need to spin faster than that on a 5850 :).

The fans support PWM on the 5850 then? Does it just plug right into where the stock fan did?

Is this solution more likely to blow more hot air in to the case? The stock fan blows out the back of the card doesn't it?

Most aftermarket graphics coolers do dump heat into the case but I guess that's the price you pay for quietness. Provided you have exhaust fans it should not be a problem if your CPU and motherboard temperatures rise by a one or two degrees.

Even in my case with a slow moving exhaust fan I've only seen a few degrees of increase since installing my Thermalright Shaman. But oh my, so much quieter. :)

The Arctic Twin Turbo, Arctic Extreme Plus are both PWM controlled natively. The Shaman comes with a 140mm PWM fan but you need to be a converter to actually use the graphics card PWM output.

Well to be honest the noise of the blower has never bothered me, its just the slight rattle (like a hard disk reading) at low fan speeds that does.

Probably just a worn fan bearing that needs lubricating then. The noise may have always been there and just been masked by the rest of the system though so may not go away.

Any idea how to remove the fan assembly? Had a quick google but couldn't see anything.
