Hi everyone, just got a quick question i have an asus 5850 along with my 20" monitor, im gaming at a res of 1600x900 and at the mo im going through gta4 but i was wondering if its safe to cap my framerate lower than my monitors refresh rate?

I started with vsync on and it was capping at around 55fps so i decided to turn this off and just use d3doverider for triple buffering which then capped me right on 60fps, with my monitors native refresh rate being 60hz i was wanting to cap the game at around 45fps via the command line option as the sudden drop from 60 to 45 is kinda annoying at times. I wasn't sure if capping a lower refresh rate than what my monitor is set out for would do any kind of damage?

Many thanks

Thanks for that mate, i just want to try and get a nice steady framerate. Most of the time when im playing gta4 its running at 55- its just when things get a bit messy and there's lots going on like gun fights and especially going to times square :) it drops all of a sudden to like 30fps then shoots up to 55-60 again.

Gonna have a play around and see what the highest cap gives the smoothest gameplay

Oh it's like v-sync. I don't know about this particular game, but in Eve there's a setting called Interval. If you set it to Interval One it'll cap FPS at 60, so any dips can make the game jitter. If you set Interval Immediate, FPS goes up to whatever the card is capable of - so any dips aren't noticable.
