My 5850 has been getting noisy when my PC is just sitting idle...kinda sounds like it should be doing something with high graphic requirements.

Temperature is around 56C is that's any help.

I bought it at the start of the year and the noise has just started recently.
any ideas?

Is it overclocked?

Check your fan profiles. If its getting noisy thats the fans kicking in.

Whatever program your using is probably set to rev the fans up once it hits a certain temp.

Have you installed any new graphics/overclocking software recently like Catalyst Control Centre or MSI Afterburner, or did you install the latest drivers along with the whole catalyst package!?

Is it a buzzing or just the fan going higher?

If its buzzing not much to do. Thats just coil whine, you have to deal unless its crazy bad. Mine does it and I hate it beacuse noise means vibraton and to me vibration means stuff wearing out.

If fan, get gpuz and check temps using that, core temp is just one temp on the board. You have memory and vrms that can also get high. If all seems well, then you can set a custom fan profile using msi afterburner.

I downloaded the latest Catalyst Software Suit and never overclocked it.

When it first started to get noisy I cleaned the whole case out with a can of compressed air.

I'd say it was more of a buzzing noise now that you mention it.
I also noticed today that the noise stopped for a few seconds when I banged my foot on the table holding the tower.
