Hey up, first off I apologise to overclockers for going off on one after a few too many in another thread.
They put prices back down and I bought a 5850.
Top notch customer service and speedy delivery.

However, having a few issues which are simple enough to just voice on here;

System;
Phenom 965 (125 watt)
4gb ripjaw 2000mhz ram
ASRock M3A790GMH/128M
2x 500gb Western digitals 1 os 1 storage
24 inch Samsung rose monitor
and the Sapphire 5850
XP 64 bit (yes I know, windows 7 as soon as I can grab it)

1/ whining from the card- it doesnt sound at all pretty when I wind up empire total war on the intro screen- enough to be a serious irritation, sounds like a dodgy connection or something, high pitched electrical whining. Stops when I move into actual game.
<having researched think this is a BINK video issue, can anyone confirm please? Esp if it will damage the card- noise = vibration)

2/ the CCC control centre will launch in the task manager, but wont come up on the desktop for some reason, I think this can be sorted though.

3/ when installing the inital drivers got an error message; simple window popped up;

Severe (in red bar at top of box)

No ID on GPU (this is an approximation, think it was GPU with a few letters, clicked through and the card is running fine)

Nowehere in anything does it say this card was made by sapphire- have they missed out something in the production process that stamps the card with the manufacturer?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Card is cool, quiet (when it is not whining) and performing well. Not heard the whining in anything else, just ran a furmark 1.7 benchmark, very dull buzz (sounded 'right' unlike the other one), score 11917. Voltage, clocks and the rest seem fine also.

Any suggestions guys?

Follow up;

1/ whining from the card-
NEVER SKIMP ON POWER SUPPLY. Took me a while to sus this one, but I went for a colors 750 watt first off@£30. Thought the overkill would cover the fact is was cheap.
Not so (yes I know) £100 and a 750 watt corsair supply the pc is quieter and there is completly no buzzing of any kind whatsoever. My guess is that the crap power being supplied by the colors (through the ide rail and the supplied sapphire converters) forced the voltage regulators on the card to work overtime, when i listen extra hard I can still just about hear the same noise in the same situations, just several orders of magnitude quieter.

2/ Issue with new versions of the drivers not installing over each other properly, http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=122359&enterthread=y. Havent got round to solving yet as am heading for windows 7 tonight or tomorrow (I thought everyone ran xp64bit :P ).

3/ still no clue, but nothing I have seen on the screen related to the card says anything about sappire. This ll probably be sorted given time.

Prepping for the move to windows 7 and raid 0 tonight, if you hear screams...its me.
